VIP.  Kirk is the only man in SC that I have ever helped stack a board off a sawmill.

Glad y'all are coming.

123maxbars

I haven't seen any sawing ideas yet for Saturday so I thought I would throw some out.
1) Sawing beams/post. Different techniques  on sawing a post and how to get them square as possible. Examples would be 8x8 post for a timber framer or 6x6 post for a customer building a barn. I researched the forum today and that topic came up quite a bit.

2) Sawing for grade on logs. Picking the best face on a log and the best strategy to get the highest grade possible.

3) Another idea on Friday after the Kiln Class have a small meeting on the business side. Whats working for some and whats not working/advertising/web sites etc.

4)Another idea is just put @YellowHammer is some form of painful mid evil torture device and have him tell us all his sawing/drying/marketing secrets.

I vote for option 4 but make it after he hooks us up with his barbecue.

Also he could explain his secrets to you, however he could not understand them for you.
After having visited with him it is my belief that he could write books on what he has learned by doing.

GAB, I really appreciate your comments, and I'm always grateful and recognize when people have my back. I really respect and thank you for that. That's an all too rare thing these days. You da man.

The good news is that 123Maxbars and I have been good friends for awhile, and I know he was just joking about my somewhat protective business philosophy where I generally adopt the Jack Daniels "mums the word" approach to disclosing our techniques and secrets. If anybody ever goes on a Jack Daniels tour you'll hear them say, "Behind that door is our mash room, we don't show that to people, it's our secret."  I do much the same to my local competition.  Its just good business sense.

However, with Forum members it's different, and I don't hesitate to show folks what we do, how we do it, or otherwise help others, either when they come here to visit, like GAB and others have, or when we go to see them at Customsawyer's project.  Jake has led by example and has set the gold standard for helping us all learn new things at his projects, and I certainly will try to do the same.

If people want, I can talk and answer questions on our business and marketing strategies, or other "special" techniques we use to process and sell our wood.
YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

Be smarter than the sawdust

re #4: I say you bring a 16' 30" walnut and let a newbie saw it at 3/4" thickness and deadstack it right in front of him....in the sun, no wax on the ends, then restack with 1 4x4 sticker every 8 ' and at least 3' from the ends (1 sticker per layer for those having trouble following). When sawing tilt the large end up another 1',  so the boards are have as much pith and sapwood as possible...every board should have some pith.  He'll start crying and give in before you get halfway the restack :D.  Hey if you are going to torture the man do it right- be merciless.
Liking Walnut

I appreciate the compliment YH. Danny and I were talking yesterday about this project. It started out just a few of us friends that lived fairly close to this same area getting together and sharing ideas. We were all in different markets, so no competition to each other. So all were willing to share. That same thing has held true through all of the projects. I can't take credit for it, it"s  just the way it has turned out. I wouldn't have it any other way. Most that come for the first time always come up to me and share how amazed they are at the openness of everyone. Men and women both.
As to the sawing demo. I'm leaning towards sawing some walnut and showing the importance of minimal sap wood. Also have some curly maple that I need to saw some 4/4, 6/4 and 9/4 out of.

Robert:
Thanks for the reply.
I have a suggestion for you and that is to take lots and lots of pictures and notes enough so that if ever you were incapacited for some reason or another that you could write books with lots of pictures and diagrams to inform and instruct the future woodworkers and lumber generators of the world.
Please do not get me wrong: I do not wish that on you or anyone else.
However, an ACE, or two, in your back pocket is always a good thing for a fall back position in life.
I sure would like to attend this year, but it does not look good.
Concerning a sawing project:
How about sawing a 12' long octogonal porch post that has 12" across the bottom flats and 6" across the top flats.
I would definitely start with a low value log for the first one.
