Our Rhino brushcutter has devleoped a lower seal [gear box] leak. What, if any, may be a good temporary sealant until I have time for repair?

Raider Bill

I've used grease before in leaking gear boxes.

Never seemed to hurt

I don't know of any temporary sealent,  but you can pump grease in it with a grease gun and be good to go.  Seems like getting barbed wire wrapped around the blade shaft has caused me more seal fairure than anything else.

EP gear grease will work also. I know new holland has it under there name. It is basically flowable grease, thicker then 85-140 but will flow. I use it in my John deere brush cutter. Put a little in every year and seems to be fine.

If it's the gearbox drill and tap a zerk fitting and fill with grease and give it a few pumps with usage, chain box, bite the bullet and install a new seal, it needs 80-90 wt.

I use the Permatex Ultra Black (Oil Restistant) RTV Sealant if i have to leak proof, or just temporary fix a oil leak. Sometimes it ends up being a long-term fix cause it works so nice.

May give this a shot sometime though:

Lots of gearboxes have seen the change to grease, but just be sure that there is no lube pump in the unit.

One of the gearboxes on my Bushhog was leaking badly.  I shot a tube of grease in it, and now it holds 80-90 without leaking.
