Been so wet here that there aren't many places we are allowed to cut. So we took this job cutting a lot of junk pulp. But at least we are still working.

My view for the day.

Jobs like that you wonder why is this being thinned?  Give it a haircut and let it grow back with more junk.  Better than sitting home though.

That's what I kept thinking just buzz it off and hope whatever grows back is better. There isn't a straight 8' stick of wood in the place, 2/3 of it is full of rot and overgrown seams, just junk.

We re  cutting a patch like that now.   Clear cut though.   From a short distance it looks like a nice younger stand that would produce a lot of bolts.   Nope, lots of rot and seams and the tops are all dead.   When the tops are dying like this the limbs seem a lot tougher than a healthy tree, you ever notice that?

If the stand was clearcut before, is there any reason to expect a different result if you were to cut it all?

To my non forester's eye that looks like a low site index hard maple stand. I have a few spots like that on my land holdings. I thin them heavy, cutting about half and then underplant white pine. In 15-20 years remove the overstory to release the pine. White pine will be much more productive than hard maple on those low fertility soils.

It is low site index ground for hard maple, very shallow and rocky soil. This is TIMO land so they aren't going to go through the expense of plating white pine, not to mention there is no market for white pine so if your goal is revenue, softwood isn't the way to go about it.

There is some nice stump sprouted red oak growing on the site. So if it was my land I would probably leave the oak overstory for seed and then make sure the soil is scarified to promote oak regeneration. Also leave some of the best hard and soft maple and cut the rest of the junk. Right now the stand has an initial BA over 200 sqft/acre, and we are thinning it down to ~80BA, 99% of what is being cut is half dead and full of rot. Probably 80% of what is being left is as bad or worse than the junk being cut. My question is will the majority of it still be alive and marketable in 10 or 15 years when they plan to cut it again?

1270 I've noticed that the half dead limbs don't shear off worth a darn, makes an already crap job a lot more aggravating.

To bad about the lack of softwood markets. One never knows what the future will bring but it is difficult to make forestry investments when there are no current markets. If 80% of the 80 BA is junk then only 16 BA or so is any good. Sounds like a good site for a deferred shelterwood. Cut down to 20-30 sq. ft. leaving the oaks and the best maples, do some site prep, and let it grow for 40 years. Hopefully it would regenerate as a mixed red oak, red maple stand. Of course site prep cost money so that is why the owners are not doing it.

First solid day in the bush running a saw, the fella I bought my skidder from will be operating it this winter on my property and I'll be doing most of the cutting.  I've done lots of cutting but not on this scale, a solid day in the swamp taking out beaver ringed trees and dead or dying ash, some good oak as well.  Most of this is going for firewood.  Feels good to be cutting, looking for a new chainsaw.

wannaergo, there is a place to rotate pictures in your gallery. Seem you have to have the phone a certain way when taking pictures. The pictures may look right to you,but to me they are sideways.
