walnut color

hey guys i have a bunch of walnut trees on my land sawed a few this summer but they are not reallydark like i see others are also seem to have some disease in them as there dying with lots of spots where bark is coming off not very good lumber to whats the deal

As far as the color of the lumber, depending on the size of the tree and the conditions it grew in the amount of heart wood (dark) vs sapwood (light) can vary quite a bit.  Younger trees that grew in more open areas tend to have less heart wood.  

Are you located in an area where Thousand Cankers Disease has been affecting walnuts?  The bark falling off is a sign of TCD.

Are you sure that they are walnut?  It amazes me the number of walnut trees that I talk with someone about over the phone that turn mysteriously into hickory trees when I go to look at them.
