Stump stingers

@stephen alford and i have been going back and forth about the old dozer mounted stump splitters of yester year. Often paired with a saw blade or a straight arm for pushing trees down first.

Have any of you guys run these or own[ed] one? Yes i known excavators are the cats meow but unless youre offering me one we can leave that out. I got a decent small dozer and plenty of stumps to pop. The biggest i can save for the backhoe when i get it moved.

We have a stump splitter for our D7 it's nothing I'd want to do on the regular it's hard on everything.

Nah i cant fool with that style. Ive got a inside arm 6 way blade.. Itd snap it off. Like a beak in the center. Theyre kinda hard to find pics of anymore. FAO.org has a brush control guideline from 1948 with a lot of the old methods, think its in there.

These are what is used out here for stump splitters, ours is lifted up and down by the winch on our 7. If you're using anything much smaller good luck splitting a stump or the dozer surviving.

Wasnt expecting that style at all, never seen one like that.

Whatever i build will work. The dozer is just a carrier to get the attachment in place. The attachment will be what lives or dies. I wont risk tearing the machine up.

I know you don;t want to buy something but maybe make one of those screw things they use for splitting logs. that may work pretty slick and be pretty gentle on the equipment comparably.

I have never seen such thing. Only thing I've ever used for stumps is a cutterbar, or rippers in the absence thereof. You havent got the HP/weight to swing a cutterbar. My little D31 had rippers but not enough tractor for serious ripping.... its always been something kinda funny to me that they give you three tines to drag around with a D3 when a D8 struggles with one but anyway... ditch a couple and you might get more penetration.

Maybe a root rake if they're only sapling sized. I got pics of a little clip on rake I built for mine if you want them let me know but yeah... it worked better once a few teeth snapped out of it.

The good old days of big stumps and little dozers solution that was used here is dynamite.

I always wondered how one of those screw splitters would work for stumps in the ground , making it easier to dig out afterwords with a dozer or excavator

When I saw them being used at a farm show I was impressed but thought "thats dumb, whats the point?" at the farm show they were just splitting long logs. This thread helped me think of this idea. I do wonder how well it would work with a live stump in the ground. may have to kill the stump to get it to split but who knows.

at this point in time I do not have any need for one so it is not on my build list.

I cant share it and risk having someone else make them, which my big mouth has done to me many times, but i got it figured and the parts laid out for the prototype. Just got the tin over my fab spot yesterday, itll probably take a month or 3 to get around to it.

The D31 will wear the light duty rake for piling up the mess after the stumping tool makes big stumps into little ones. I expect the rake to bend up but have to build it to find out, i enjoy destructive testing and i get credits for it toward my engineering masters from the University of Trial and Error. Definitely would love to see pics of yours LL

Old L.L. beat me to the punch line. Being in a socialist country we can't buy dynamite. Black powder can work but if you ordered that much the fbi or somebody would stop it. We bought a screw splitter for the skid steer hyd. post hole digger. Works good [slow] on the logs you don't need it for. No way it would do stumps. It will screw in and not back out.
