Heartwood

The Timber Framers Guild, an international non-profit organization, has acquired the Heartwood School for the Homebuilding Crafts to further its educational mission. The Timber Framers Guild is dedicated to the revival and advancement of the craft of timber framing. With the addition of the 43-year-old Heartwood School in Washington, Massachusetts, the Guild will be able to expand its educational offerings to serve a broader audience.

This acquisition of the Heartwood School represents an evolution for the Timber Framers Guild. Members of the Guild range from professional timber framers to engineers to preservationists to an enthusiastic cadre of timber frame aficionados; the Guild serves this diverse membership by offering workshops, trainings, and regional gatherings, where members can get together and learn new skills while sharing their own knowledge. By purchasing the Heartwood School, the Guild will take a more active role in educating people interested in craft and the building arts.

Timber Framers Guild Executive Director Mack Magee notes "The Heartwood School has been educating craft-minded people interested in the building arts in its sessions for over 40 years. This regularly scheduled, consistent programming has trained thousands of people over the decades. By purchasing Heartwood, the Guild, celebrating its own 35th anniversary, will join other institutions committed to elevating and ennobling the work-life experience of those engaged in the trades. TFG Heartwood will continue to develop the Heartwood School legacy."

Heartwood will continue to offer courses at its campus in western Massachusetts with most of the current  instructional staff, including former Director Will Beemer, author of Learn to Timber Frame.
