By BIL salvaged it from an old abandoned store on his property. He thinks it may be part of a butter churn. It is about 4 feet long.

It does look like a hand bilge pump. A vintage piece if it is.

I'd be willing to go with pump, especially after seeing the leather washer on the end
I believe in the hereafter, because every time I take two steps into the tool crib to get something I wonder " what did I come in here after"

If nothing else I'm always a good last resort or the guy to hold up as a bad example

It is a barrel hand pump. The taper would fit in the top bung hole on the barrel.

Ok, while we're on the subject...what's this?  My mom bought this for me years ago at a flea market because it was made of wood.  It's been sitting in the basement.

Any of you guys who are old enough to remember a wooden barrel pump were likely focused on drinking the hard cider to pay attention to what pumped it out of the barrel. :D

I like the wood vise idea... but it could be used as a can crusher too. ;D
Under bark there's boards and beams, somewhere in between.

Gotta be a barrel pump. Used metal ones in lacquer thinner drums in the body shop.

Just don't move the barrel after the potion is done, you'll have 50 gals of vinegar  :o :D.
