Clearing some ground that used to be farmed and was let grow up , mostly ash and a little birch.  Nothing much but firewood, although there is an occasional log worth keeping for the sawmill.

I went thru there on the boat yrs ago. Its longer milage wise from NYC to Oswego NY going around than going from NYC to NOLA. The seaway is a fun trip, the Welland is eh.

I have no shame cutting 8ft wood, alot of guys here wont do it, doesn't bother me.

There has been no mercy given on this one, they cut the best and left the pulpwood, went on a 14hr walk about yesterday. 😂

Will you be doing seaway work? Pretty river, but tough waters with a pretty challenging draft. Pilot work up there pays pretty good, but it's stressful. I have spent many weeks on a small boat in the Thousand Islands section. You picked a cold time of year to start, but I guess you are used to it already and know the drill well enough.

I went up there with Moran a LONG time ago 😂 I want to say I was 19? I did a season on the lakes in 2004/05 for another company. Did the Erie from end to end and some of the Champlain, been thru the black rock locks in Tonawonda which isnt far from the falls. Going down the seaway is like extortion, the last time I went the office had to send someone from CT with a bag of money to keep paying the pilots, why you dont see alot of boats go up there unless it's a season's worth of work. I'm not a fan of working for the "evil empire" but the moneys good and the equipment isnt garbage, they are known for killing a few southerners every once in a while on the barges but the notch is not something I plan on crossing.

QuebecNewf,

Green dot's where I do work for a northern SPF mill, and red's home.  Man, I have spent four or five days in Deer Lake in the winter more than a few times ---- that were supposed to be in-and-out same  day. hahahaha!!   You do get the weather that puts the rest of us to shame.

Funny story about the north where I'm helping the northern mill:

Down here if there's a skiff of snow or a bit of ice on the road, there's panic and schools are closed.  Softies and snowflake politicians and bus drivers!!!   Up north there, only two reasons schools are closed:  1) it's below -50C or 2) the wolves are in town hunting children.  That's the written board policy.

I was 5 in, at least, but I was reading from the 'most recent posts' and selected 'reply' to the one below the one I wanted to reply to. My bad. I did see your post and did some research ;D ;D ;D. I have a hard enough time keeping up with my own local feuds and competitions, it is even harder to keep up with ones and hour and change away. It would be a lot easier if I lived in beautiful uptown Conesville. ;D Or maybe not. I have to keep track here of who is mad at who and who I can tell that I worked with so and so and they won't get mad at me for doing certain business with a certain guy. i like most everybody and they each have the things they do better than others, but there are of course a few guys I don't like or trust either. I have no tolerance for Low ethics. Every town is the same, right?
Sounds to me like if I ever came up and we had real visit I would wind up sleeping in my truck in your driveway. Not that this would be a bad thing. :) Just lets not do it in February, ok? :D I've done that many times, but I am getting older, I'm told.

I can barely keep the 1 satisfied 😂 I honestly feel like I'm kept around for one purpose anymore. 😂
My competion is a half wit who wouldnt have work if he didnt wear knee pads into wagners office, he can do his thing, I'm slowly getting there.
Not bad for 1 day, by monday morning it will be a decent pile, another load sits by the slasher ready to go for morning, rail it up and just keep driving the slasher ahead.

So we are getting ready to harvest some White Oak, this is one of smaller ones.  Look at the growth rings in this forest, by my estimate this was just getting going as the civil war kicked off.  It is all of 12" in diameter.

Going to be interesting seeing if the rest of the forest is the same age (even aged stand) or not.  We are seeing lots of regeneration in pockets and not too much epicormic sprouting (all as  a result of disturbance from remnants of hurricane isabel).

Points of interest to me is the deep suppression for the first 60 years of life til it was a 4-5" tree, then some event happened and it was released and grew more rapicly for 20 something years.  Then the canopy/forest closed and for the last 60 years (guess-I can't quite count all the rings) it has only added another 2 inches or so.  We're going to push our luck and see if we can release some of these trees.  I cut this one to test what impact can about from a stem bulge about 1 foot off the ground.  A bit of shake right at the base, this is from a second cut at 2' off the ground.

That's a nice pile Eric. Forget the competition, he will sail or sink on his own merits. (A little nautical metaphor, see what I did there?) How long are you cutting those logs 12'+ or 14+? I am eyeing your pile and I need a few logs if the local guy con't come through.  :D

Yes, that is the plan.  Now it has brothers and sisters that are clocking in at 26" DBH and probably 30+ at the base but we'll hand fell them and hope for veneer.  There are about 30 of these smaller ones/acre so it is going to be interesting.
The site and surrounding areas are between Richmond and Charlottesville so it has been settled for 250+ years.  That's why it is interesting to see the old trees.

Welcome to winter in the northwest thank god it hasn't started to rain super hard yet.

SwampDonkey

I worked a few years up off the north coast of BC and it rarely froze ground. The geese were on the Eden Lake all winter and in the yard doing what geese do best on lawns. :D The lake never froze either, the float planes were in and out of there at least once a week. We'd see some snow around late December and never see it again until next December. Winter was dry up there and the rest of the year was rain almost every day. But our roads was all on crushed/blasted stone, no wet bog holes at any time.

celliott

Started a new woodlot this fall, been working weekends when I can, have sent 4 loads out so far. About 40 acres of spruce/fir and some cedar. Most of the lot is wet, as soon as deer season is over I'll be freezing in roads.

Also, dad got a call asking if we wanted a big dead oak for firewood, figured I'd take a look, most people's definition of a "big" tree isn't all that big. This one was! Nothing valuable within reach so down it went. Hollow on the butt, mostly solid wood though. We don't see much oak around here.

Shoulda brought the bigger bar! 2188 with a 20" got it done though.

Weathers not helping but keep getting after it. That poor old stroker just keeps going, time to put a complete boom chain in it.

Wasnt a bad picture he got tonight coming off the powerline, probably 500 trees down in the hole up there, finish cutting the job tomorrow.

Story of my life. Cut softwood pulp and junk till deer season is over then some slamming wood hopefully when I'm home again.
