Inventory sampling question

Have seen some references to variable radius plot (prism) sampling favoring larger diameter trees. Also seems like borderline trees can cause some issues. With this in mind is it better to use a fixed radius plot sample in a previously high graded stand heavy with <20"DBH trees? Or is it not really a concern and I am over thinking things?
