At times I use a maasdam rope puller when cutting trees. I have a couple of  bent gate carabiners rated at 22kn and 23kn and want to use them to make connections. Other than the safety feature of locking carabiners is there any reason to believe the bent gate style would not be as strong? Thanks

The gate makes no difference, they are fine to use. The Massdam has a 1500lb pull which is in the safe working load of those biners. They should be loaded along the spine and not used as a choker where side loading can occur. Its better to use a running bowline for that.

My son is a climbing arborist and he'll use the lightweight, hi-tech 'biners.
I'm on rigging duties, and I'll use steel locking biners. Heavy, & strong enough for almost any abuse.
