Help!

Hard Maple? From Illinois

Looks like it has large medullary rays.  Looks to be white oak.

I can't see that pic very well at all but it came from a large tree and my very first impression was Acer saccharinum just based on the general "look".  Very poor way to id anything for sure but I'd bet a dollar vs. two.

The rays in sugar maple are not that distinctly seen with the naked eye.

All I can get from the pic is a general impression, even on a pc monitor. It very much reminds me of the end of  a sugar maple board in a stack at about 2' away. I'm assuming it was weathered gray. I've got some handy in the shop and will try to remember to look at it tomorrow to jog the old brain cell, singular.
