A federal court has ruled that the US F&WLS must establish critical habitat for the lynx. Critical habitats are areas where the government would focus efforts to restore endangered species where they might be expected to thrive.

The ruling which resulted fron a lawsuit brought by Defenders of Wildlife, could affect road projects, timber sales, and other projects in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Lynx will only survive where there is a healthy hare population.
The hare population has a cycle which affects the lynx population.
No hare = no lynx.
Ask for an environmental assessment.

Maine: Can Landowners Save the Canada Lynx from Decline?

CSMonitor.com (September 8) - The kind of clearcutting that made the woods of Maine an ideal hunting ground for Canada lynx is a thing of the past, but wildlife experts are trying to recreate enough of that habitat to secure the thick-furred cat's future.

With forests maturing and clearcutting tightly regulated, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and private landowners are working together to avoid a precipitous decline of lynx in the state with the biggest population of them in the contiguous United States.

Shudder to think what wild and expensive scheme the F&WS will dream up to "create" more habitat. But indeed they will, bar no expenses.
