gearmatic 8a parts

I have an 8a gearmatic on my jd 1010c which has done yeoman work but it has a problem with excessive freespooling so that the cable gets all ratsnested and jams, Gearmatic made a retrofit drag mechanism for this unit but apparently it is an obsolete part and is not available from all the sources i've tried ie: Braden, JD etc.
Any ideas maybe somebody's got one laying around...
