OK, it's just a RR Cross Tie with the center/pith rotted away but what is/was the species?

There is a place on my quarterly Forest Use Tax form for quantity of pine cross ties sawn. Figured the form hasn't been updated in a long time.

Cross tie tale:
I spent many hours walking ties in my youth as our hunting and fishing outside Topeka, KS was via the Rock Island line double track. We'd entertain ourselves by trying to see who could find the oldest tie date nails. This was in the 1950's and very common to see them from WWI era in either direction. Another diversion was pennies on the track. Hopping cars to gain some lazy miles was also common if the RR bulls were no around. When they were we had to walk long distances to avoid them and I'm happy to say I have all my arms and legs after some stupidity back then.

That old one above must be lying on a side of the tracks. The Rock I RR used to give them to farmers who worked the land beside the right of way.
