jd 440a engine
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:43:32 PM »
the 4219 engine in my 1970 440a skidder has seen better days.  rather than sinking money into the old 4219, i would like to swap over to a 4039t, 4239d, or a 4045d.  anyone know if one of these engines are better fit than the other?  ???

can you do the end main mearings inframe? i like the idea of the inframe rebuild, but i have compression to cooling system issues. i have another head to redo but id rather loose the engine. old small fuel injection pump as well.

My 440 has a 130hp 4045T swapped in.. Only had to change a  few things to make it fit. Cut a hole in the hood for the Turbo/exhaust, Air Filter, Adapters for the Shaft/Waffle disk for Hyd Pump was the biggest. Wasn't the cheapest engine at $3500

so she is blowing bubbles. orings on the liners or they are pitted through  you must run colant condishener . headgaskets will bother some on worn out engines. the liners wear then dont seal to the fire ring

snowstorm, i replaced the headgasket and it didnt help. also there is never any coolant in the oil and it smokes black black just getting it moving. are you saying the mating surface on the top of the liner could be untrue or liner pitted.? would you think this is the problem is that rather than a cracked or damaged head?

jd dosent have much head trouble. the liners i have seen pit through. there are bubbles in the colant and they implode inward and it wears a hole thru them. thats why you must use colant condishner. all diesel engines will do it. thats why trucks have water filters. if you are getting bubbles in the rad but no water in the oil its head gasket. but if the liners are worn it dosent have a good surface to seal on. when you changed the head gasket  did the fire rings look ok? the head should be checked and surfaced if needed. the black smoke is fuel those injectors werent known for lasting a long time

i thought there was a bad fire ring on the gasket i removed. then after the replace it was bubbling over on the ride out of the shop.  i replaced the injectors last week and it didnt change in any way..??  way way low on power

if its white or gray smoke could be low compression. dose it start hard? sounds like its time for some new parts

every now and then after its warm it takes a little more turning to start it. but the smoke is black enough to leave black soot on the cab like the big rigs left on trailers in the 80s. i agree,, time for new parts

Well that could be something.. are the bolts tight? IP could have come loose and timing could be off.. Would help explain Black smoke and low power.. Generally results in very hard starts too

the pump bolts are tight.. and the lines are tight as well.  shouldnt the pump be some where in the middle of the adjustment?

Your engine is easy to time, get it up on no. 1 compression, pull valve cover and watch valves to verify, then at the back of block on left (pump side) side you will see a small cover held by a single bolt with a about 3'' pin on the bolt head, this is your timming pin, at top dead center rock the either way until the pin inserted in the hole under cover dropes into the hole in flywheel, this is top dead center now pull the little cover off at the front of the injection puml and allighn the pump timming marks, just use the long mark in the center of scale on both sides.
