People sometimes send me cutoffs for my site and in one batch the sawyer included this little piece of a fluted stick. I'd never heard of anything like it before but I'm not a sawyer and just wondered if it's common or rare or what?

It's made of ipe which means it will last approximately forever but it sure looks like a lot of work to make since you'd have to make multiple passes on each side of a plank over a router table with a roundnosed bit and then rip the plank.

Yup, I have thousands of them. The stickers I have are made of Ipe and Greenheart.  I buy them in 10' lengths and then cut them to 42" and 48" lengths.  Sometimes, If I need to build very wide packs, I use them full length.

They work great on white woods and extremely well on oaks.  One thing to caution on though is that if you build a big pack with them, don't do it with a soft wood suck as basswood, white pine and so on as they will receive impressions in the wood and when you plane the wood, there is some disorientation of the wood fibers.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I imagine there is a large and complicated machine some place that makes them by the thousands? Making them by hand would be a pain for sure.

Such an ignoble use for Ipe.  :o On the other hand, where it grows, it is as common as sugar Maple in upstate NY.

Thanks. Sadly, Loki has gone the way of all good dogs but he will always be my avatar. He made it past 11, which is pretty old for a Pyr.

The machine that I saw a video of a few years ago was interesting.  The machine was old..... but was producing them very quickly.  Looks like it was running about 100-120 feet per minute.

They are run through on a 40 degree angle and produced by a series of moulding heads with rubber and slotted feed wheels.  I wish I could find the video I saw to post here.  Very interesting and quick.

I read about these stickers a few years back when I started wood working and could not afford them.100-120 FPM is some thing that resonated two years ago my shop. To those of you with the fluted stickers , envy !! 8) 8) 8) 8)
