Title: In Venezuela it is a lot of wood, a good wood.
Post by: serg on July 30, 2006, 01:53:46 PM
In Venezuela it is a lot of wood, a good wood.
Why it is not interesting to Venezuela, processing of a wood? To dry, do(make) products?  ??? ???
I can not understand a policy(politics) of attitudes(relations).

Chaves, the Venezuela president,  just made a speech in Tehran, Iran calling for the downfall of the "American Empire" >:( >:( >:( >:(.  He's more interested in buying Russian fighter jets and manufacturing Kalishinkovs with his oil revenue than in processing wood.

We have good friends and customers in Venezuela who cut Teak from their own forest, that they planted years ago, saw and dry it and produce and market very fine Teak Flooring. There are others in the country in the lumber business but it is sometimes tough on business when you have a government that does not trust businessmen. But these are doing well even though they were not necessarily supporters of the current regime.

I have been to Venezuela at least eight times and have traveled the country extinsively doing missions work there for over a decade. The Government gets all of the oil money and the people get nothing.  Caracas is a fairly modern metropolis, and they even have a pretty nice subway system. Just a few miles out of Caracas, and for the most part the rest of the country, it is poverty beyond belief. Most of what you hear on the news about Venezuela is things that happen in Caracas. The rest of the country is so poor that they dont have time for politics and are just trying to get enough food to eat for supper that night. They live from meal to meal, not day to day. Every garbage dump in the country has permanent residents that make their living gathering parts and pieces of what others throw away and selling that for scrap. They literally eat the waste food that others throw away or feed it to their pigs to eat. This country is full of poverty that we in the USA have never seen. Until you see it first hand, you couldnt possibly believe it.

I have seen some hand made furniture that I  literally drooled over and wondered how to get it home on an airplane that people had made out of old shop equipment that was held together with bailing wire and string. Unbelievable craftsmanship !  I also have bought hand hewn wood bowls from down there that are so good they look like they were turned with a lathe, but they were totally hewn by hand with chisels and hand tools.

It would take a good investment for someone to go down there and set up a logging industry. Vehicles are the most expensive thing to buy in the country. All of the logging equipment would have to be imported, and the dock workers and govt officials would have to be bribed to get your equipment after it hit the docks. This would double the cost of the equipment.  Then, you would have to hire and bribe someone to freight it to you and guarantee that it all arrived without being stripped in the trip to you..... the list goes on and on.

Dont get me wrong... the People of Venezuela are some of the most caring and decent people in the world and I care for them and their country deeply. The handfull of people that are in power right now are keeping a whole nation in poverty because of their greed and corruption.

Don Lewis and getovverit let's write Ugo to the president of Venezuela to build many factories work of a tree! All world will buy furniture, a floor.. What for to Venezuela Kalashnikov, it is a lot of weapon, few peace trades?
The small country rich petroleum., a wood, gold. The commodity market is, money is. And people eats from a dump?
Then a question: Kalashnikov the factory - will clear a drug mafia of Venezuela?
