Title: Log oil preservative ?
Post by: MillDave on September 12, 2022, 08:45:12 PM
I'm sure somewhere here their is a discussion about this but I've had no luck searching.
I've been using a product called OutLast Q8 log oil for fencing, sheds, deck and other random projects for just under 3 years. It has a cleanish natural look to it for the SYP I milled and use it on. I'm impressed the wood looks just as good as when I milled it. Last time I bought a 5 gallon bucket was late 2018 for around $250. With Bidenflation , it's now just under $400.  ::)
I was wondering if someone here has used it and may know of another similar product like it for less.
My next project is a 600sqft hay barn with board & live/wavy edge battons. Roughly cost about $1,200 to oil it doesn't pencil in for me. Any ideas?

I use Cabot Austrailian Timber Oil. It's $230 for a 5 gallon bucket at Lowes. I have had success with it preserving wood well in our envioronment for several years. It requires recoat at least every other year but I've never found anything else that doesn't.

X2, the Cabot's Timber oil is one of the better options out there just be careful not to get the California version water based crap.

Roger that. Definitely don't want water base. I'll give it a go. Thanks.

I buy my Cabot's Timber version from a DoitYourself hardware store/lumber yard locally. Theirs comes from a TN warehouse that stocks the good version, i.e. not low VOC crap. The guy gives a good discount on any volume buys. I get many of my log building items(so far Spax screws, foam tape and Big- Stretch/SASHCO caulks from Cor-ten in Knoxville, TN. Ask for Will their log specialist or see their website for wood finishes.
My log home has Cabots AU oil on it now, and definitely great product for a more natural look.
Current build I'm un-decided on the finish? Tightwad in me sees stars on the high dollar log stains or two coat types.
