A farmer friend of mine gives me logs sometimes.  He texted me a pic and asked if I wanted what he thought was maple.  It's about 14" diameter.  I'm not sure if it's maple, but I told him yes I want it.  What do you think?

Look closely at the end grain.  Is it ring porous or diffuse porous?

I won't be closer than that picture until Thursday.  I'll look at it then.  Maple will be diffuse porous?

I think Norway Maple. I call them An ornamental tree.

Does not look like Norway Maple. I will go with Red Oak or maybe Pin Oak. Norway Maple bark resembles Ash and the wood is not pink or reddish.

The oaks are ring porous and the maples are diffuse porous.  A quick way to rule out one or the other.

I looked at it today.  It was definitely a red oak.  Possibly pin oak as @KEC  suggested.

I would have liked the maple.  I can get red oak like crazy, but maple is harder to come by.  I will get some small walnuts and elm and possibly a locust from the same location.  The smallish walnut logs make great live edge slabs for making cutting boards and trays, which has been very popular.

The bark screams red oak group. The pale heart can throw some off, but the pale heart is what makes me think pin oak. A close picture of the end grain would be good. If anyone went to the trouble of looking at the top you could look for telltale horizontal branches typical of pin oak.

All I got to see was the log.  It had distinct open pores.  Color was light for red oak, but it was definitely a red oak.  Medullary rays and ring porous.

FFOTS,
Bring your truck with you to the Pig Roast, and I'll load a couple Maple logs for you to take home. On the other hand, I'd love to stockpile a few Oak (any kind...) logs in anticipation of the arrival of my new Bandsaw Mill in August. I don't have many Oak on my land, but I'm down to my last couple million Maple....

Trouble is I'm also bringing my fifth wheel, so I don't really have any room for logs of any size.  I can get silver maple all day that were yard trees, but I don't come across straight maples that were forest grown.  That's what I was hoping that log was.

Does look like the younger red oaks around here and we have hardly any oak in these parts, more down river. I rule out maple because our maples all have white splotches on the bark, red and sugar. More prominent on sugar.
