Topic has been updated to show the winners of the 2012 Forestry Forum Christmas Contest
Congratulations!
Seeing as thecfarm put my feet to the fire this past week, you can blame him that this year's contest is more diabolically difficult than any before it. But hey, that's the way I roll anyhow. ;D
This years prizes:
Brucer - First Prize: Choice of 60" Logrite Peavey or Cant Hook. THANKS LOGRITE TOOLS!
reride82 - Second Prize: Bluecreeper Value Pack
reride82 wanted to donate his prize to another person in the hat, as he already has some Bluecreeper on hand, so I drew another name
Tom L You are the 2nd place new winner!
Radar67 - Third Prize: Logrite T-Shirt
Estiers - Fourth Prize: Forestry Forum hat and coffee cup combo.
Jueston - Fifth prize donated by thecfarm, Four jars of The C Farm Jam and jelly. All are 8 oz jars,Raspberry,Blackberry,Strawberry Rhubarb, and Blueberry.
Entries have to be received by Midnight Christmas Eve 2012 (Eastern Standard Time), and winners will be drawn from those entries on Christmas Day.
This year's contest begins with a wordsearch puzzle, using some of the most prolific Forestry Forum's member names, with a couple three other words mixed in for good measure. :)
How to play.
1.Use the puzzle link below to view and print out the puzzle.
PUZZLE LINK (https://forestryforum.com/christmas-contest.htm)
2. Find all the names on the puzzle
3. Use the unused letters in the puzzle to reveal the SECRET MESSAGE
4. Use that Message to find where you must go on the Forum to complete the contest. Use of the Search function will be most helpful. Once you are there, you will know it, it will be clear you have reached your destination.
5. Follow the instructions found with the SECRET MESSAGE to complete your entry.
6. If you do everything correctly, your entry with the correct information will be sent to me for the drawing.
Helpful Hints:
1.IMPORTANT! Make SURE your puzzle prints out in its entirety. After it prints, check it against the one on screen. Make sure you have all the rows of letters.
2. Keep your puzzle legible. Be very careful about circling words. If you circle extra letters, or can not tell what are the extra letters, you will not be able to reveal the SECRET MESSAGE correctly. Drawing a line through the letters may be a better way to go. Tammy recommends using a narrow highlighter.
3. Use the extra letters starting with the top and going left to right. You will have more letters than you need at the end.
4. Use the blanks given on the puzzle print out. This will show you how many words, and how many letters in each word.
5. Read all the instructions where ever you find them. Its the simple things that will foul you up. :)
6. Take full advantage of reading glasses, a magnifying glass or a telescope. Or, better yet, get a kid to do it for you. :D
Good Luck, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and HEEHEEHEEHEEHEE! ;D :D :)
And thanks again to Logrite tools for this year's prizes. :)

If you are reading this, and you view the Forestry Forum as a guest, and want to play, this is a good time to get registered so you can join in, as you need to be a member to be able to complete the entry at the end to have a chance to win a prize. :)
PUZZLE FIX!!! It seems that there are 3 words that appear twice in the puzzle, purely by random coincidence in the puzzle creation. I am going to give everyone the locations of the wrong words. You still have to find the right ones.
EDK starts 24over and 5down and runs east
ELY starts 26over and 7down and runs Northeast
NORM starts 4over and 4down and runs west
Now this is gonna be fun! I've already got highlighter ink all over my screen. :D
An additional note. Some usernames that had spaces, numbers, or special characters were shortened for the puzzle. As an example, the guy with highlighter on his screen. ;)
Wow, this is a good one. ;)
:o :o :o I shoulda mailed da Fruitcake. eh eh

We have a special box for fruitcake, with a special liner. :)
Good, I printed it out .. it came in two pages ... ::) :D More fun to have. :)
I tell you what.....if you see one, you better Dang well keep your eye on it. It'll disappear and you'll never find it again. :D
My eyes are crossed. Bad.
Well after checking the thing out and finding a few , I realised I was missing some letters.. dang I was short three rows of letters.... :-\ Have a new one printed out with all the letters this time . It is in three pages ... :) :)
Some of you have really weird handles.... Just saying. ::)
It's an honor seeing my name on the list ;D Hopefully there won't be a tie like last year ;)
You better get Grace busy on this. ;)
Thanks Jeff, that was fun!
Your welcome. :)
3 successful entries so far, and one that failed to provide what was asked to be provided, so out it went. :-\
That sure is nice of Logrite, thanks guys!
Just saw this.I will give it a try. Don't be surprized if you don't hear from me.
Sure was alot of fun ... Hope whom got tossed was not me :-\ Finding all them names was a head scratcher at times . :D
A big thank you goes out from me to the Logrite Team :-* :-* :-* ( Kevin you can get your :-* from Jeff, these are for tammy. ;D )

I don't know why but Pigman was the hardest and last to be found. Kept me up way past my bedtime.
Jeff- Just to be clear, in the quote below did you mean "with a couple of three
LETTER words" as opposed to what's written below.

I don't think so, but maybe I worded it funky. I just meant some words are included in the find list that are not member names, such as "Christmas"
i thought maybe because i won last year i would get an honorary place in the list... but i guess not... :D
i'll have a go at this tommarow, but it looks pretty challanging...
To create the list, I sorted the database to show me members with the highest post counts, and then some adjustments had to be made from that in order to actually make the puzzle come together. Some names from the top were dropped, and some with lower posts were added depending on what I needed for letters to make things fit :)
Thanks for putting this up Jeff! Gives a guy something to do to stave off cabin fever whilst the weather is too yucky to want to make some sawdust, and a big thank you to Logrite for putting those new shiny thigs under the tree! Now to de cipher this confounded message!?!?The word search was the easy part!! ???
Sneaky indeed :D
Merry Christmas and Good Luck to all 8)
I HATE puzzles, y'all have fun.

I was always known as a trouble maker. :-[
I hope I wasn't the one that got pitched. As tired as I was staying up late working on it, its possible I screwed up.
I've sent a message to the one that was not right, so they know they need to re-submit. I don't tell them what is wrong.
Still working on it! smiley_dizzy
Sometimes its better not to hear from Jeff. :D :D
Hey, I found my name and I'm not even on the list.... 8)
NO just kidding... ;D ::) :)
9 more names to go. Pigman is one of them. :D
I'm bringing in the big gun to help me with the rest.
My eyes are tired. I found a persons full name that wasn't on the list.
While putting it together yesterday, and then testing, we found an inadvertent extra yooper. :D "Chet" had worked his way in there twice. The inadvertent yooper, if selected, and it surely would have been, totally screwed up the secret message by using letters that were supposed to remain unused. The only way to fix it, was to start over. Durn that Chet! :D
If you find someone that is not on the list within the puzzle, you may want to compare your printed list with the one online to make sure your printer didn't skip it. :)
Yes, my printer put in on the second page and I missed it. ;)
I thought it was an extreme coincidence to have Don Papenburg on a downward diagonal. :D
:D I thought Chet was extreme. :D
I found the word "sewage" in there.
Member "sewage" got flushed out and had to leave in a hurry.
That lil' stinker was full of it. ;D
I am thinking that I had better substitute a German Chocolate Cake, or a Pecan Pie. :)
You mean I don't have to wait for the Forestry Forum decoder ring to arrive in the mail first?

A listed name within another listed name legit? Or need to find 2 Tom's ?
Just came in for supper, heading back out,I get my secret weapon working on it too. :D
I know there is a Tom in there Beenthere, so I am guessing you need to go look again !
You need to find everything in the list. A name completely within another name would not count.
Ok, went back and found them both. ;D
On to phase three.
"Be sure to drink your Ovaltine."
Careful, there are at least 3 names that are in the puzzle twice. You gotta circle the right ones or you won't be able to find out that you're supposed to be drinking your Ovaltine ;D
Hopefully I got everything submitted correctly. This was a tough one and I'd hate to lose my new LogRite on a technicality :D
Jeff - I must assume that .......
1. I got nailed by a technicality or that....
2. You are not responding to our entries regarding their completeness and accuracy.
Beenthere - Yes, CustomSawyer is not Tom.
The only way I could get through that puzzle was to enlarge it with my office copier. I was operating today and had too much time between cases.
He is Jake. I can get that much right :).

Yes, CustomSawyer is not Tom.
1. You hear from me if I know you didn't do it right.
2. If you did do it right, you don't. OR
3. You did it so wrong that I don't even know, and in that case, you LOSE.

Quote6. If you do everything correctly, your entry with the correct information will be sent to me for the drawing.
So we don't know if it is succesfully submitted ....I presume, or do we get feedback that we are done?
Well at least I found all of the names, so I can move on the text step. smiley_sweat_drop

I'm getting steady successful entries, so if you don't get through...
I found pigman and the other missing members but had to ask my wife for directions.
The next part of the challenge sure seems tougher. smiley_sweat_drop
I'll say, once you get the names, the secret code is easy, long as you didn't inadvertently mark extra letters. You simply start at the beginning and put the extra letters in the blanks. No trickery there. So, I think the second part is easy. :)
He may be butchering it ;D
Got the puzzle solved, but I guess I need to brush up on my use of the Search function!
smiley_thumbsup smiley_thumbsup :)
No Ovaltine for me.
No reason you cant ask other members for help. Or, better yet, maybe someone will offer. Anything asked of me, I'll have to tell everybody if I tell anything. :) ;)
The wording in the secret message is clear and fits nicely into the blanks provided.
Then the search function -- I'll leave it there as I don't want to give any clues - like Ovaltine, and butchered. ;D ;D
Don't want to do it if I need clues. I'm happy just continuing to try to work it out. 8)

I circled the wrong EdK and the wrong Norm. Thankfully, my darling wife knew how to fix it. ;D
I never did find Larry, but it turned out not to matter much.
There is a DONK inside SWAMPDONKEY. I would not recommend using it. :)
There is a TOM inside CUSTOMSAWYER. ;D
I did find "Bob" while looking for pigman.
Hey Jeff, where could a fellow buy a hat like the one you are sporting in you most recent avatar. I just love it.
Tammy bought it at Walmart last year.
There are two ELYs as well. :)
I recommend using the search from the menu line, not the search box at the top of the page. For some reason, it doesn't always return things it should. Over the years, I've considered just removing it, but never have.
Is the second ely independent of any other word, or within another word?
We did go back over the puzzle and found those randomly created duplicate extra words. I posted the location of those wrong words in the first post of the topic. People still have to find the right ones. We have had 30 people make it through so far, so even with those other words in there, it is still very possible to make it. :)
It's funny how this puzzle works with your mind.
I used the zoom feature on my puter and zoomed onto the puzzle. If you spend a lot of time on the Forum, the names start to get embedded into your mind. So when I zoomed on the puzzle, they seemed to stick out like a sore thumb. :D
The hardest one for me to find was......are you ready.......believe it or not.......WDH.
It was hard to fine just 3 letters. :D
We created a master copy that has the columns and rows numbered, with the names identified, along with their associated quadrants and direction of travel. It was still tough finding those extra words you guys identified.
The extra Norm seriously messed me up, since both Norm's were in the message area. However, I was able to ask my wife, who had completed the puzzle before me (in spite of the fact that she has no frame of reference whatsoever for most of these names ::) ). She had also circled one or two of the wrong words, but managed to figure out the message anyhow. She thought there were just extra letters in there. :-\
WDH was one of my toughest ones too, but the last two I found were Dan Shade and Larry. Dan Shade was also one of the last ones for my wife to find.
I ran out of printer paper. Can somebody lone me some?

I found them all in Word.
Then lined them out on the one printed page.

Is the second ely independent of any other word, or within another word?
The "extra" ely runs perpendicularly to three other names. It is not contained within one name, but three. If you circle the wrong one, the right one will become apparent once you begin circling the leftover letters.
Tom was the hardest for me to find.
Ernie was my toughest. :-\
I just started over with a new sheet and pencil this time. :D
WDH jumped right out at me. He's always pretty quick.
I was toward the end when I got to him, so I just started looking for a spot with "nothing" in it. He was easy. :D
WHEW !!!!! ;)
red oaks lumber is the hardest one still can't find it.
:D :D
Congrats, Chuck. smiley_thumbsup

Quality, not quantity :).
i somehow ended up with a few extra letters in my secret code, but once i put all the letters in a line i could pick out the words and see the extra letters....
but i agree if you spend enough time on the forum a lot of these names pop right out at you, i didn't even have the read the list for about 1/3 of them. the ones i found hardest were the ones that weren't words like wdh or ianab
but eventually i got it done. 8)

Now I can have my evenings back. ;D Been working on it each night since Jeff posted it. It gets easier as you get the names. And yes,Tammy,a thin highlighter is the weapon to use. ;D
MarkM is listed twice as well.
My printer is out of ink, So I just copied the puzzle to work and used the highlighter function in Word. The vertical ones were a pain.... :D
Ain't looked at-it..........yet, but..........if it ain't got sweetgum in-it, I ain't playing.
Finished up the puzzle but im still searching for a way to get the highlighter of of my screen. Any ideas, its sort of distracting?

Ok, ok, ok already! In an extreme gesture of diplomatic generosity, I will solemnly pledge that if I should win 5th prize, none of those jellies or jams (or preserves) or contents of those jars, shall be placed in direct contact with, or eaten in the same bites with, the perceivedly abominable substance that is such an anathema to the generous donor (s) of the 5th prize.

I love jelly and jam. Never had any from Maine before though.....When I win, this will be a first!
All I can say is, that is the way I am most of the time. bg
We have not had any new entries today.
Good!
Jeff , I am working on it, don't rush me. I did find one name today. 8)

Did you find me yet? How about yourself?
Did you find yourself? Have you ever asked yourself the question, "Who am I?"
It is not too late to find yourself.
Better late than never! :Mrs_Claus:

Oh shucks, the ELY I found was the wrong one. :( Maybe I will find a correct name today.
I am changing my name from sprucegum to mugecurps so y'all got to start over
This contest is a lot like finishing drywall. There is a secret to getting it done and I found the secret. It took me three days to find the secret to finishing drywall, but I am getting smarter. It only took me two days to find the secret to finishing the word search puzzle. Let someone else do it. 8) My wife took one look at the puzzle and said " Jeff made it easy". :o It was not long before she had it finished. I did the hard part and used the secret message to finish the contest. ;D I just hope I was smart enough to send it in correct. ::)
I am getting ready to quit, 7 hrs so far, puzzle is done. rechecked twice, got the first 12 words, the last two are almost impossible :rifle: nothing makes sense to me
Don't give up! I just finished it, and I think this is the hardest Christmas contest ever. :D
I had to work on mine a little at a time with my morning coffee. Cowboy Bob said, "What are ya trying to do, split the atom?"
By the way, I printed mine out in landscape format, and once I saw that there were two Norms, it began to make sense.
If all else fails, there is a the systematic approach. Methodically go row by row and find the first letter of the word, then look at the surrounding 8 letters for the second letter of the word, etc. There is also the cover up method. use a sheet of white paper to cover the adjacent row or column to help you focus on that one row or column you're looking at. It will make that row stand out and easier to see words. You can do the same on the diagonals too, though they are harder.
And the next step to make it a bit more systematic (from Bradd_bb letter search) is to put it in Word, and use the "Find" function. Even then, it takes some time.
But as pointed out early in the contest, carefully striking through each letter of the name found so those not struck out are easy (easier) to find for the secret message. I at first thought there were two messages, but after considerable frustration decided only one.
There really is no secret to the secret message. The unused letters are placed in order within the blanks given. If it does not form a complete sentence, then there was a problem with your word selection.
Or a problème wit leter sélection. ;)

Yes, the second one is what we now call "The new norm."
There's a new Norm ... ??? Really ???
what a load off my back, I just finished. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Jeff, you are a very bad person
now it's off to a nice bottle of scotch I just bought myself to celebrate.
actually bought it wednesday. but didn't want to open it until I finished.
:christmas:
:D :D You were the 49th entry. :)
thank god it went thru
:christmas:
Where is my jelly and jam ??? ;D.
I circled all the words then went back through with a black sharpie and blacked out the circled words. That leaves the hidden message standing out better. Probably shouldn't give away my secrets, I'm looking forward to that peavey. ;D
With the ownership and complete control of MY 8 oz jars of Raspberry,Blackberry,Strawberry Rhubarb, and Blueberry jelly and jam that is located in thecfarm home in Chesterville,Maine I know reply #143 is as close as your g...s will ever come to to them. ;D
How dare he try to put them with that , that stuff :o
I'm all out of funny things to say, so I'll just give you an IOU for that one! :snowman:
Bump :elvis:
Just a little less than 24 hours to go.
I was working on finishing the finishing touches concerning the finish of a Christmas project I was finishing up. I hope the finish will turn out ok. I am babling as I almost forgot about doing this..... Notice the time and my eyes are burning but I think I have it! Now I can go to bed.
Jeff you are creative! Thanks to those donating prizes!
Wow, I did it!
Three nights of head aches and the wife wondering why I am so obsessed. She worked the puzzle over and then I repleted it again to be sure we didn't miss anything. Got the message okay but the second step was a real brain killer. Thanks for the help and guidance when I was feeling lost. Don't give up anyone, you will feel victorious even if you don't win any of the prizes.

Is the drawing at midnight? If so, I think I'm gonna stay up for it! I don't think Santa will mind, heck he might wanna know winner too! Hmm, I wonder if Santa is a member of this forum? ;D ;D ;D
:christmas:
Nope, the entry deadline is midnight. The drawing is sometime tomorrow when there is a convenient break in our Family Christmas. I've been watching and studying some of these reality T.V. singing contests when they announce the results of something with a long dramatic and irritating pause. ;D
Santa IS a member of this forum.

That's pretty 'cute' how Santa and the little guy on top of the tree are holding the same pose.
I believe Santa's put on a few pounds since last Christmas. :)

Although I did have my eyes on the homemade Jelly and Jams.

David,
If there was a "most spirited avatar" award, you would definitely win it. That has gotta be the one of the nicest avatar's on the forum. ;D

Thanks to everyone on the Forum: if it weren't for all of you, I wouldn't have been here to enter the contest ;D.
Mind you, I think I earned it. I hate word puzzles like that. I'm terrible at them.
This time I thought I'd be smart and use the computer to help me. Cut & paste the diagram into Excel. Reverse all the lines so all the backwards words jump out at me. Then make all the vertical lines horizontal, and reverse them. More words jump out. Then turn the diagonals into horizontal lines and ... wait how the heck do you do that? And even if I can pull it off, how am I going to figure out where the word started anyway?
In the end it was "easier" to just go hunting for the words. Fortunately I have a stubborn streak or I would never have hung in there.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas.
reride 82, thank you for the second chance at winning a great prize! very gracious of you, and thanks to jeff for putting together such a great site. happy new year
Tom L
No problem TomL, I hope you enjoy the Bluecreeper as much as I do! Thanks to Jeff and all the sponsors for putting this contest on each year. 8)

jueston, your jam and jelly went out this morning. You may get it Friday.Between the wife and I,we gave all of the blueberry away. I replaced it with a strawberry, sorry. :embarassed: We only had 3 jars and she thought she had some more.
That was very nice of you reride. :)
I also enjoyed the challenge of the puzzle.
Congrats to all and a :new_year:

the package did arrive on friday, at first i didn't remember that this package was coming and i was concerned, the package was a little beaten up, the hand writing was a little sloppy, and it had a fragile stamp on it, in the army they told us those were the signs that the box might be a bomb or anthrax attack... :D
but after opening i found it was not a bomb [i don't know if it had anthrax in it, since i have the vaccine]
but seriously, its delicious the love of my life and i have both enjoyed it very much, thanks for sending it out so fast :)
If he wanted to do you harm, he would have sent grits :D.
via way of GA. :D Can't buy them things this far North. :D
You have to have a permit :D.
Well I'll tell ya right now,I'm not applying for no permit. ;D
Drat, snubbed again :'(
Danny and I wood appreciate it if next year's contest involves the identification and recitation (from memory) of the scientific names of multiple obscure woody plants native to the Southeastern United States. That ought to narrow down the field a bit ;D
Just kidding, congrats to the winners and many thanks to Jeff and to all who donated gifts to make the contest possible. Happy belated New Year! :)
I would think that it would be quite a job just making up the "search-a-word".
With my luck I'm surprised I did not get the fifth prize. :D
One month later ...
I promised Tammy I'd post a picture of my new cant hook when it got here (not it didn't take THAT long). The thing is, when you ship stuff to Canada, even gifts, you have to watch out for brokerage charges. Everything that crosses the border has to be brokered across. The big couriers usually provide this service automatically -- and charge you a bunch for doing it >:(. They don't bother to mention this to the shipper, because technically it's the receiver who is importing the goods. On the other hand, if you send the article by mail, Canada Posts charges a very nominal fee for brokerage services and the USPS will usually warn the sender in advance.
Fortunately Tammy already knew this and was planning to mail my cant hook anyway. I told her not to rush, as all I could do with it right now is measure how much snow is beside my mill ;D. The prize arrived several weeks ago but I didn't manage to get out to the milling site until late last week.
Here's my new cant hook, alongside it's smaller and much older brother.
And here's how deep the snow was last week (both cant hooks are in this picture, too ;D ).
That's the sawmill behind the two cant hooks (you can see the mast over on the left). This is actually a pretty mild winter so far. A few heavy snowfalls, and then weeks of no precipitation at all. The skiiers alternate between joy and depression.
