How bad does a cylinder and piston have to be scored before it's junk ? Do you have to be able to catch a finger nail in the lines or how do you tell ?

Depth of the score as it relates to have penetrated through the cylinder plating is crucial, especially above the exhaust port where all the compression is made.

On the piston, anything that has affected the rings has the same undesirable effect. Often times Nikasil plated cylinders will clean up nicely with muriatic acid treatments to remove the aluminum transfer and a new piston and rings can get it back in business.

Beware of air leaks and lean out problems with any saw that's scored, you have to vac and pressure test them to make sure your rebuild doesn't self destruct from an issue that went unsolved.

It doesnt take a whole lot of scoring to destroy a top end.  Look at the booming aftermarket piston and cylinder business.  A 50:1 fuel mix, in my mind, is right on the edge to begin with.
