Since we have more than adequate deer herd, the emphasis was on reducing it by taking does and fawn, which I did.  Ended up with 6.  Giving some away to single mothers and others that we feel are a bit needy.
I eat a high-fiber diet.  Lots of sawdust!

I snapped a cap on a doe but experienced detonation retardation.  ;D
In other words ...the primer failed.
Got back to the camp and the other two guys each had a deer, 10pnt. and a doe which is plenty for us so we quit hunting early.
Good hunt, could have done without the wind and rain.

Venison?  Tom, is that what we call deer meat down here? ::)

Y eah i got one, I hit it with a van though haha, so anyway i was leaving my house and about 30secs down my road i was going only 70km/h and bam this deer ran into the front left of my van, i stopped got out and checked the damage, it wasnt to bad a few dents and a broken light, and everything plastic around the area was obviusly broken too. anyway it was kicking in the ditch still alive. from what i could se on it it had 2 brkoen legs 1 rear and 1 front, and a broken jaw, so i couldnt just leave it there since it was so close to my home, i went back and got the 308, came to the deer put'er down "it was doe"" and loaded it into the back of my van, hung it in my mobile garage and skinned it, gutted it and now its hanging in my shed frozen and ready to be cut up :) i got some pics if you want :) PM me, warning... the head isnt pretty :P

I spent some quality time sitting in a tree watching the world wake up.  Saw lots of squirrels and chipmunks filling their larder for the winter.  Heard the gentle snap of a used up leaf parting from the branch it resided on all summer.  Watched as the leaf floated to the ground ever so gently, landing with a gentle rustle as it nestled in with its kin on the forest floor.  Reassociated bird calls with the birds.  Heard and felt the heavy fog condense on the trees and drop to the ground.  Saw the wind winding its way along the hollows to brush against my cheeks.
Never did see a deer.
Will be out there again Friday.

I'll probably get another one out of the front yard and into the freezer, hopefully homeowners choice  :D. Heading down to her brother's hunt camp in Bama for the holiday. One friend hit a deer, got it fixed, and hit another  ???

The news today, the plumber/electrician on the job stopped by. He got a Bear, it was his second of the year...the first was with his truck.

Ok now, havn't been deer hunting but I did get me a buffalo back in the spring.  Neighbor of mine runs a feeder operation for beef.  Well somehow he got a herd of buffalo for a while and a bunch of those rascals escaped.  They tried to hem a few of them up but at that stage they'd tear out of a fence in a minute.  So, they came by and put the word out that they were fair game.  They were afraid they'd hurt somebody or get in front of a car.  Little scope of woods near here that I'd seen one of them stick his head out on occasion.  So I felt it was my duty to save the world and my neighbors of this dangerous escapee.  Took the old sks and went buffalo huntin.  Was a bugger to drag back to the house and dress but pretty good eatin.

I clipped a deer just this evening...  Only a broken marker light on the truck.  It ran away into the weeds before I could stop, so I guess it wasn't hurt too bad.  Seen more deer this year than any other.  Strange...   ???

Hmmm, Saturday night I had a one pound porterhouse steak, that cost half of what the last deer cost me per pound.  I am still pondering the ramifications of this.

Clearly, any venison, is worth twice as much, and tastes twice as good, as Texas beef.

Tiz a puzzlement.  A steak that can be cut with a fork, from good Texas beef, or a ticky old deer that needs to be ground to be fried.

Jeff, ya got to get out more.

Here in Mid Missouri, we used to harvest 4 to 6 animals during gun and bow seasons.  This year my friend has got the only animal, a button buck, and together we have not seen 4-6 deer all season.  Dont know if numbers are down, or the deer are getting smarter. :D :D

Jeff

Don, you never had deer from up here then. Most of the deer that I shoot grow up in a cornfield, get fed sugar beets and carrots every fall by other hunters ya mix in some orchard apples and white oak acorns thrown in. Tammy butchers them with just a knife, bones and trims every ounce. You can cut it with a fork too. Oh boy.

Today was the first day of our deer season in Iowa. I went out by myself as both of my sons have to get paid tags which are only good for one of our split seasons. After getting chores all done and Patty off to do some Christmas shopping I headed down to the creek in the tractor. We have snow on the ground so it makes it real easy to spot anything moving. I sat in the tractor waiting for it to get light enough for shooting and headed out to my favorite spot that overlooks the valley the creek runs through. No more than 10 yards goes by and a doe jumps out of some heavy brush turns broadside to me and sticks her tounge out at me. It's so thick that there's no way to get a shot off so I just watch as they trot off. Another 20 yards and here's another one. Wait a minute this ones got antlers. Lets see 8 maybe 10 points. Of course my shot goes nowhere near him and he runs off in the same direction the does went. Spent the next couple of hours wondering why I didn't put on my long underwear. Back to the house for a quick breakfast and long johns. Dry socks and I'm ready. I headed to another small grove of trees and spook up a half dozen does. They aren't sure what I am and in a couple of hours start working their way back. At about twenty yards I picked the best shot and he drops on the spot. All right got him in the head, no meat wasted there. Course I was aiming for the heart but what the heck it's a clean and quick kill. I get the tractor load em up and bring him back to the shed to peel the hide and remove the innards. Been a great day but I'm pooped and Patty's back from shopping.

EZ

Good job Norm.
Here in Ohio it's deer gun season, started last Monday. Miss the first three days of it, got a peace of metal in my eye and when I would pull up, everything was blurry. Eye is better now so I been out trying to get the big boy. Will here it is the last day of gun season and still have'nt got one. Now I would do anything to just get a shot at a doe. :D In for lunch be back out their in a little bit, to get the big one, NOT. ;D

Norm

Thanks EZ, I wrote that Saturday nite but didn't get around to posting it until this morning.

We were drinking coffee this morning when we saw 12 does and one lucky buck come out of the woods where I got the button buck. About twenty minutes later 19 of em came out of the valley where the creek runs. All of em where on a dead run with their tounges hanging out. They'd been running for quite a while. I came in at noon and Patty and I stripped out the loins and ground the reast into burger. This is for a neighbor that after 30 some years of marriage found herself divorced and broke. Only took a couple hours and made us feel good to help someone out.

Norm,
That was a very good thing you and Patty did for the neighbor lady.It speaks volumes.

Thanks for the kind words Paul and EZ, my sons are the same age as hers' so we've known each other since we moved to this part of Iowa some 15 years ago.

The weather has taken a nasty turn so I'll not do any more hunting unless one runs through the back yard. Second season starts next weekend. My oldest son is going to be home from Germany during it so I'll get to hunt with him for a few days and my youngest son will take some days off to hunt with us. Nothing makes an old dad happier than to spend some time in the woods with his sons. 8)

Fla._Deadheader

AMEN to that last statement, Norm. Ya done good with the neighbor, also. Proud to know you and Patty.  ;) ;) :) :)

My son at 23 yrs old is just to busy with all his running and party time to do anything with me. But I do understand and I do love him dearly.
My one son-in-law, Matt is pretty much top of the line. The poor kid aint ever really had a dad to show him anything when and now. He went deer hunting with me over the week end. First I must remind you all that this boy is 5ft 10inches- 240 lbs. He kick a nice big doe up and mist, after he shot the first time the doe stop and stood there about 50 yards from him. He just stood there aiming, next thing I seen he lowered his gun and the doe took off. I walk over to him and said what happen Matt. He said boy this gun sure does kick hard, I didnt want to shoot again cause I thought the second shot would break my arm. ??? ;D I just had to laugh because of the size of this boy. Bless his heart tho, cause he sure has a big one.
