Help needed to ID tree
« on: December 22, 2020, 10:11:28 PM »
Found this tree while walking though the woods in East Texas (Jasper)
This was the only tree like this. Does anyone know what species it is?

Looks a little atypical obviously, but I'd say its hackberry.

It is Hercules Club, Zanthoxylum clava-herculis, also called toothache tree.

As usual, I'm wrong again.  I did some research before I gave my answer.  I had found pictures of the same kind of tree and it was labeled as Hackberry.  Guess that guy didn't know what he was talking about either.  I'm off to learn about the toothache tree.

@firefighter ontheside you were on the right track.  My gut reaction was Hackberry until I saw how pointy the bumps are.  We have hack right on the farm and the bumps at times may be as plentiful and prominent as those, but nowhere near as pointy.

Just as you, hackberry was what came to mind, but I doubted the pointy warts.  I did some searching and found some photos of a tree in Texas just like the tree in question.  It was identified as hackberry, so I thought, well maybe they grow em different in texas.

No prickles on hackberry, this small tree is the one you grab without looking when you jump the creek, that or devils' walking stick.

Did you notice the expression on Jeff's face in the above picture??

I took that picture immediately after I had him to chew on a sliver of inner bark.  Numbness follows the taste.  :D
