Can't wait! But I'm just wondering Jeff, if you could tell us the exact date, since I don't really wanna count all the way through the calendar 150 days. ::)
I think I'll bring some beer cake. And maybe some cheesecake too. 8) Who's bringing the grits? :D
August 6th, 2005
did someone say Grits?
Wrong pig roast!
:D :D :D :D :D :D
GOOD!
Hey Jeff, ya gonna be up all night again with the piggy?
We'd really like to meet ya this time when ya aren't half asleep afterwards.
DanG!
Two pig roasts the same day! We hold a pig roast every other year here at the farm. (Kinda strange for a beef cattle farm). Anyway this is pig roast year and it is always the first week in August.
Wonder if our guests will miss us? ;D
I've read about the past Pig Roasts, and they sound like fun. Where are they held and who is invited?
What Stumpy said. 8) ::)
Everyone is invited and encouraged to come.
The BIG one at the BOSS'S place is in Harrison, MI.
Last year several members drove a pretty long ways to get there, and some caught a flight, but I think they will all agree it was worth every effort. ;)
Is that Harrison outside of Detroit ?
Stumpy it's in the middle of the mitten, well kind of by the middle finger, well ahhh about 10 hours from Iowa. :D
We drove over but flying was more accurate as Michigan has a 75mph speed limit on the interstates. Patty seems to think the proper way to drive is with the accelerator all the way to the floor, you can still see my finger imprints on the arm rest. :D
thats purdy fast for a little yellow jeep! :D :D
Stumpy - You can't use Harrison and Detroit in the same sentence. It's improper usage. :D
Norm_F - Michigan's expressway speed limit is actually 70 MPH. That's unless you are near Detroit. Then it's whatever it has to be to keep from getting run over. ::)
Norm_R
Shotgun,
Sorry 'bout that... I've been in Detroit once and understand why you say that.
Stumpy,
you're wise not to argue with a man named Shotgun.
I flew out last year but after getting some cheap quotes on shipping yesterday,I'm in the process of building a crate for me and my family. It'll take 9 days or so to Harrison but look at the money we'll save. ;)
HELP!!!
I can only afford 1 trip. Do I go to sawlex or the piggy roast?? ( I hate decisions like this)
My bride may help me decide as sawlex is the weekend of our anniversary. She doesn't seem to care about the shootout!
Ah, pretty simple choice in my opinion, but others may disagree.
It's nice to meet people face to face that you are talking to here at the forum. Even when ya draw a blank as to who they are when ya meet them. ::) For me anyways, it took a while to remember facts that I read here, things like bandmill or circle, grit eater or real food. ;) Things like that. ;D
As I remember, Furby really had some reservations about coming to the pig roast, had to actually talk him into it and did not know he was coming until he showed up. Furby, I take it for granted yer just going to show up this year without the prodding? :D
Actually, Paschale and I met for the first time a couple of days before last years roast. I "think" we may have kinda sorta talked each other into going. ;D
Last year the big deal was the truck, I didn't have another car to use, and really was not sure the truck would make it. It did, and I didn't even have to tow it home. 8)
Planning on this year at this point, but it depends on what work I'm doing. I won't be able to work around that. :-\
Well, that definitely sounds like me. I was on the fence until the very day--I decided what the heck, took a gamble. I'm not always a fan of meeting new people like that, even if I've been chatting with them and reading their posts for a long time. Believe me, it felt a little strange walking up to a crowd of people who I'd never met in person before! But it didn't take long, and I was just chatting away with people. I'm really glad I went--met some great people, and since that time, the Forum has become even more important to me now that I can put a face with a name. It was pretty fun hearing Bibbyman ;) tell his stories, and listen in to Tom and Charlie reminisce about their childhood. My mind's running through all the great people I met that weekend--Chisel, Shotgun, Ron Scott, Buzz, Kevin, Mark M, EZ, Hawby, WV Hillbilly, Kirk Allen...tons more...oh and don't forget da Boss! There were some there that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to chat with at all, like Patty and Norm, but I'm looking forward to meeting them and even more folks this year. If you're on the fence, and wondering if it's worth it, or if it will be comfortable, or any other thing like that, well, take it from me: you'll be SO GLAD you came! It takes a little courage for most of us to do those sorts of things, just meeting so many new people for the first time--but really, you've already met them. 8) 8)
Oh, and don't forget the Food!!!!
Well, Furby just posted a reply to this as I was typing this, and sure enough, we did talk each other into going--we told each other, "the worst thing that could happen is we just leave early." I drove home as the sun was going down! :D
And Paschale, don't forget to wear dat green & white hat again. Or rather dat Green & White hat. :D
Norm
WARNING!
For those of you that have not already met Bibbyman and Arkansawyer in person, it would do you well to read up a little and maybe even find a pic or two.
I hear there is an impostor amongst us! ;) :D
"Y'all can pronounce it "puh-SKOLLY"
I thinks we should spell it that way too! ;)
:D :D :D
I think that's how it WAS spelled last year on my name tag.
:D
puh-SKOLLY,
Tammy and I had the opposite experence at the pig roast, it was like walking into a family reunion, almost. ;D Jeff was pretty easy to spot as he had just changed his picture, the red shirt made Tom a give away, Bibbyman was introducing hisself to everbody, and I had already met Captain.
Tammy and I are planning our vacation around MI this summer, can't wait to go to the UP!
Kevin
Kevin, it felt like family when you guys arrived, and I think Tammy got on extra well do to being used to dealin with kids ;)
The piggy roast was fun, and if you can possibly make the trip you should. Norm & I left Bangor Friday afternoon, and pulled into Harrison Saturday afternoon. We were only able to stay a couple hours, but it was sure fun and the food was wonderful. We finally got back home Sunday afternoon. I haven't driven so many miles in so short of time since I was much younger and alot more spry! My butt still aches. ;D It was well worth the effort, though. Meeting WV Hillbilly, Furby,EZ & Ann Margaret aka Mrs EZ, ;D , Chisel, Tammy, Stacy & Jeff, Charlie, Mark, Corley, Buzz, Delcy, Doug in Utah, Tamiam, Arkansawyer and everybody else and all the families was great. Hillbilly suprised us all with cool gifts. He is so thoughtful. The occasion was a real delight.
Hey jeff I would like to reserve our camping spot now... ;D
We will even cook breakfast again...

You got it! Looking forward to breakfast! That was great. :)
I would have to agree with Kevin . Walking up to Jeff's yard it seemed like you were going to meet people you already knew a while . It was a great time to meet all of the faces to go with the names . I hope more people come this year .
Patty I was proud of myself pulling those nameplates off without anyone finding out till we were there . The amazed look on peoples faces was priceless . Has Norm taken the Bass puzzle apart since the tranportation disassembly ?
Hillbilly,
The bass proudly sits on Norm's desk at home. He shows it off to everyone who comes to visit. :)
My cat is proudly displayed in my office/sewing room. I mounted it in front of a velvet frame....it is beautiful. ;)
I'm surprised nobody mentioned one of da big highlights of da piggy roast. Excavatin' da bosses yard lookin' fur dat dar septic tank. :D :D :D :D
Maybe dat was da pre piggy party day. ???
Who's da guy watchin' while da rest of us dig? ???
I dont see any shovel in your hands.... It looks like you might be pretending but there aint no shovel there.
Yur not plannin' sumptin' special for this year are ya? Like movin' dat great big swimmin' pool over to da right 6 feet. ::)
Ya gonna have log rollin in dat little pond this year ??? ;D ;D ;D
Jeff,
Yur gonna have ta git a lot more creative this year. 'Cause we ain't fallin' fur dat diggin' a hole ta roast da piggy trick again. ;)
If the sap decides to run we will bring some maple syrup for the breakfast.
Would ask for a parking spot for the camper but we would be hoggin' maybe we can park in the neighbors yard :D :D :D :D :D
We will find a campground close by.
Only 110 days left to wait, and plan. Wow! (like I don't plan tomorrow until then).
Count me (and wife) in for da Piggy time.
Just made our reservations for the nite of 5 and 6, Aug '05. 8) 8)
Now, any way I can get a FF hat? Will it have a pig on it? Special edition maybe, eh?

I could be biased though.
WOOOOOOOO PIG SOOOIE!!
Erin is that where you went to school?
I did go to school there. I am a proud member of the Class of 2002. My name is etched on the sidewalk to prove it!! Every person that has ever received a degree from the U of A has their name etched into the sidewalk. It is kind of a neat thing they have there. Mine is under the 2003 class though, because I graduated in December, but who cares. If any of you are ever in Fayetteville, you should check it out.
WOOOO PIG SOOIE!!
O.K. then. I promise if we go the Pig hat route, we will make em razorbacks. ;D
SWEEEET!! ;D
ALRIGHT!!!!! 8) 8) 8) GO RAZORBACKS !!!!
Hey Teri! :) It's good to see ya posting now that you can get to the computer without interference! :D
You got that right. :D I usually have to wait until he leaves the puter and falls asleep in the recliner. ;D
Hiya Teri,
Nice to meet ya!!!
You'll have to get your dad to give you more time on the puter.
asy :D
Hey Asy...Nice to meet ya too. I'll just tell him to move it or lose it. :D :D

We will provide the home made maple syrup for the breakfast :) ;) 8) 8)
We are talking about adding biscuits and gravy to the menu this year but we are going to have to find a really good gravy formula.
mmmmmmmmm mater gravy or mabey red eye. ;D
Gotta be sausage gravy. smiley_whacko
Looks like I might have some studying to do :P
Ya'll are making me hungry. :) :)
Allright biscuits and gravy, an acceptable breakfast both north and south can agree on. Does have to be pork sausage though.
I can't eat sausage. :( Too greasy. I've got Gallstones. Anything greasy and I'm in pain. :'( :'(
Hey Teri, I guess you're "Stuck with" the pancakes and maple syrup then!?
Gee, I'd HATE to be you... mmmmmmm ;D
asy :D
Nope, I'm not much on pancakes. I will eat a little bit of gravy, just can't over do it.
Its a shame all them grits probably screwed yer digestive system up. ;)
Nope... Grits is good for ya. ;D ;D
Teri, I was just gonna say you DID NOT have to take that from Jeff, even if he is the Boss! 8) 8) 8)
Give me time.. ;) I'm still new here. Gotta remember one thing ..my daddy taught me well. I'll get even when he least expects it! :D :D :D
:D :D ;) ;) :D :D
:D :D :D 8) 8) 8)
Sheryl said that she knows how to make some of that good old sausage gravy from "sratch". If'n we had a place to park the trailer, she would be glad to make up a big batch or three. YUUUUMMMMM!!!!
The Piggy was officially ordered this morning!
Well, hotdog! I mean, PIG!!!! 8)
Was that pig fed grits by chance? ;)
I was going to say, What else would you feed Grits too ???
But I'm not going to say that , I'm just going to walk away BYE ;) ;) :D :D :D ;D
I reckon I am to lazy to read through al of the postings in this thread, but is anyone from the Left Coast planning on attending the Roast?
Teri,
It ain't the grits that'll get ya, it's all the stuff that you bury them in so they have flavor!
I don't think so!! :D :D :D
Has anybody been feedin' da piggy? Not many days left now. :)
So. do we fly into Detroit, then drive to Harrison? How far is the drive?
I gots the hickory. Last year we had no hickory for the pig. Did not realize it did not go that far north. But there will be plenty hickory this year as LBJ likes her pig smoked with the sweet wood.
54 days!
'Bout made up my mind to go to da pig roast, then saw the train post,y'all got train roads up there Jeff?
Sorry Dail, No Trains. Not even any tracks any more! :D
ANNOUNCEMENT!
And I will be saying this again. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont transport any type of firewood or log to the pig roast. Trying to Transport wood through Michigan is NOT a good idea at all with the current regulations on transporting firewood in Michigan due to the Emerald Ash Borer.
ARKANSAWYER and anyone else that is entertaining thoughts of bringing any kind of wood in firewood or log form, You could and most likely WILL find yourself facing big fines for simply transporting that hickory or what ever through an Emerald Ash Borer quarantine zone that you WILL have to travel through. Such a situation woulf not be good for you or at all good for the Forestry Forum.
It's official! My lovely bride has gotten the weekend off. We will both be at the Piggy Roast! 8)
Time to make reservations, plan our route (looks easy) and gas up the car! What can I bring Jeff?
I will be driving thru Canada so we can not bring fresh fruits or veggies.
The Piggy roast on Saturday, Yankees / Blue jays on Sunday, what a weekend! WOO HOO!
mh
8) 8) 8) The Lovely Miss Celest and I are IN!!! 8) 8) 8)
We will be riding Elvis The Roadking to the pigroast!!!!
We are taking a 2 week vacation and making the pig roast our first stop. The rest is TBD.
I need a little help. I have been searching and cannot find that list of places to stay nearby, can someone point me to the right area?
Seems I always need a little help. :-[
Jon
According to the MI quarantine, you cannot move logs of any kind if their final product will be firewood. FYI.
On a more personal note, I just found out that I am being shipped out for 8 weeks training to Maryland on 8/2. Guess I will be missing the roast, just like I missed SAWLEX.... :'(
Who will plaster all the cars with EAB bumper magnets now?? ;D
QuoteWho will plaster all the cars with EAB bumper magnets now??
Send me a case Erin, we'll do it! Actually, Sharon was going to give Tammy a case at Sawlex, but the Ohio folks that ran the exhibit on saturday, packed up and left without leaving one for her.

Jeff
I was typing that while I was making the reservation.
We have the room for Friday and Satruday nights. She says it is walking distance to your place!
Jon
Yep, nice place to. Over looks the Bluff that over looks Bud Lake where Noble was doing cliff diving demo's last year. :D
I had typed out a reply to Jon saying that he will enjoy that place but would be disappointed if he's into cliff diving. I got to thinking that Mark M. was probably the only one that appreciated my er-uh-cliff diving, so I didn'[t poke the post button. Our family along with One-with -wood and wife and Paul H and his son Tom had a delightful breakfast together with Mark at that place. I'm lonesome for him.
So Jeff you are saying that if you had the firewood in board form it's okay . You know like 4x4 's and such .
Pretty sure that transporting lumber is not a problem long as it is NOT ash, and it does not originate within a quarantine area.

What does a guy do with his wooden leg ? It willnot look to good If I have to joint and plane the thing square. Then I guess I will have to leave the woodie wagon at home also.
Not trying to be difficult at all, just responsible as the EAB is a serious, serious problem and as Forestry Forum members, we should certainly take the lead where we can in spreading the word and walking the walk.
Again, I ask, does one fly into detroit and them drive to the pig roast site? ???
That oughta work, Frank. How much is the plane ticket for that F-450, anyway? :P
One could!
Or one could fly into Grand Rapids, or Lansing.
GR is two hours from Jeff's place.
Lansing is about 1 hour 45 mins.
Detroit is about 2 hours 40 mins.
DanG, do not tempt me with the F450. Alice thought I wanted to drive it back there and haul all sorts of stuff home. I said, "No, I will just ship everything back by frieght truck. I might have a convoy before I leave for home." 8) 8) 8) 8)
No pun intended, but that all didn't fly toooooo wellll either. :'(
"I'm coming and looks like Jim will tag along "
Kirk, ya need to try and have yer ribs in better shape this time. ;D Also, it might help your navigational efforts if ya can decide whether yer in Kansas or Illinois.
Ya might want ta bring Spanky along. Be sure to pack plenty of them special M&M's ta keep him going. ;D :D :D
You could also fly into Flint or MBS (Midland, Bay City, Saginaw).
Flint and Lansing both I believe have some budget airlines too, FWIW.
Found this note on the calendar tonight. I guess my boss has given me permission to go to the piggy roast. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) :) :) :)

Frank, United Express and Northwest both fly into MBS (Saginaw). NW has flights connecting in Detroit or Minneapolis. It's about an hour from Jeff's.
Air tran flies into Flint. They connect in Atlanta, I believe. Guy's at work that use them seem pretty happy with the service.

Ya know Pigman, that statement goes against the post you made just before SAWLEX, and to me at SAWLEX. ;)
So I now know who the boss really is eh? ;D
So, if I fly into Detroit I then drive up for about 3 hours....
Flight would leave here at 2:00 PM and Arrive in Detroit at 11:15 PM - and of course I have to go through Customs....
Then, the next morning, drive 3 hours up to Jeff's place, hangup and then fly back on Monday...
The ticket is only about $400 dollars from here, round trip.
I am very tempted.
I'm really no help when it comes to airline and airport info because I have never been on a plane. Not that I wouldn't, just never needed to.
Wow Jeff, My mother never got on a plane either. She just could not imagine leaving the ground.
One of these days I'm going to make a post about my mother, she was such a wonderful person.
I got on my first one at age 24 and have been in the air, seems like, ever since.

Last time you mentioned it it was under real consideration. :)
Well, you should wait until the weather turns bad up there - I mean you must have all of 3 to 4 good months... you sure wouldn't want to lose it! ;)
By then Harold will be here and YOU can watch him for a little bit.... ;D
Piggy Roast DEEP south anyone?
The week leading up to the Pig Roast is the Clare County Fair week here in Harrison. Anyone coming up early may be interested in the schedule

Furby, This is what I said about coming to Salex . Quote " I guess I could go if my employer lets me. I said I can go. Be there sometime Thursday evening. "
See, I didn' say I was the boss, just the employer. ;) :'( ::) :o :( ;D :D :)
::) ::) ::)
Yes sir, you are correct!
I guess I just lump the two together, but in your case I guess there is a difference eh? ;D
Jeff,
You are one of those guys that keeps me grounded in reality. I just take flying for granted, business trips, family vacations, seeing the world, etc. I find it hard to comprehend that people haven't flown anywhere. I like when my eyes are re-opened from time to time. I think I got absorbed in the whole thing because my big brother is a pilot for Delta. I'll ask him if we could borrow a 737 to run some FF members down to Costa Rica for crtreedude's pig roast. We have to help keep FDH from getting too wild down there.
You have not lived until you have had Chicharrones!
I am not sure there is any hope for keep Harold in line - I came down here to relax (HAH!) so trying to keep him out of trouble is way too much work.
The only problem with so many visiting is that they won't want to go back.
By the way - I saw wild pig tracks on the new finca today - amazing! Perhaps one will volunteer for the pig roast.

I REALLY want to go up in a Heli AND learn to fly one! ;D 8)
