Damage to a firebox top expertise

I have come across a boilers firebox top plate with an odd pattern of damage.  Anybody seen this before and know if it is a sign of other possible issues?

It's hard to draw any conclusions from the picture, but that doesn't look damage from heat.  That looks like damage from a hammer.  Metal fatigue from heat should have some rainbow coloring.  I don't see any.

looks manufactured, maybe done to increase surface area to improve heat transfer.

Looks like the backstop to a shotgun range.
