Rain, wet snow, mud.   Been like this over a month now.  No end in sight.

We've had so much rain since spring that our ground never firmed up and dried out this summer. First time in nearly 40 years I recall that. It's still soggy. Every time it starts to firm up, we get a week of rain. Had a mudslide over in the next town 2 days ago that took out power for 24 hours and closed off a major feeder road to several communities. That doesn't happen here. I think we should all get rebates on our taxes until they figure this out and fix it.

I feel horrible for these people up VT, NH,
ME 🤦‍♂️ I mean some places got SMOKED. I'm 1 town over from Prattsville NY, seen what water can do, we where 10 days without power, literally put the road back together in town with our iron, material and trucks after Irene because it was such a mess.

Bypassing here and ending up in the NE. 2nd Year of drought here. Still hauling water to my cows in a pasture watered by a pond and 2 blue line streams in normal years.

Seems to be a common theme lately; praying for rain, then praying that it will stop raining.

We are really hoping for moisture, it has been a dry year. Still, I don't miss muddy roads and log landings.

If we had just a bit more rain it could wash this mud away.  The worst drought in 40 years is broken here, streams flowing again.  Ground just squelching so we've got enough moisture.  Our harvest site is an upland site with a gravel loam soil, not bad actually, drains out nicely.  The small state rd into the site though has lost the shoulders, if a log trailer just swings a bit wide in a turn (and they have to - it's narrow and twisting) they can lose the trailer.  Had to do a bit of road work the other day where a trailer almost flipped, brought in ballast rock and scooped out 18" of crush and run that was all run and no crush, it was so soft you could stick your hand right into it.  Packed in the larger rock.  Hopefully the shoulder holds now, will test it.

Waiting on hydraulic cylinder parts that will not be here until the end of next week. So it's going to try to freeze up this weekend  :D  :new_year: Going off that and knowing my luck we will get a mid January thaw again

Well I hope to turns cold here soon , log truck yesterday got what was left for logs out of east field but was stuck before ever getting to log pile in west field , just greasy so I hope soon he can start drawing these logs , but just about everyday its a wet kind of like fog out so ground is not drying up at all

the wood yard is frozen ruts. I stumble and lurch around like I'm drunk when I walk on it. At least at this point there's no ice and just a dusting of snow. Wet areas are still too soft to cross but on dry ground it's very easy going. Central Maine....

It was raining lightly at 8 this morning, we have no snow in the valley. In fact the fields are green which won't go well if we get a sudden freeze. I like the early spring like weather but if no snow we will pay the price.

I got a combined half mile of muddy driveways back dragged and flattened out, kept everyone off and got it froze up now  :snowball:

Almost 2" of snow thanks to last night with single digits tonight so we are looking good. Still don't have that hydraulic cylinder... Also it looks like you can walk on the ponds but DO NOT WALK ON THE PONDS  :o :D

Frozen ruts in the mud here.
Last I checked Christmas week, we were just under 6' of rain in calendar '23 @ 70".
In the woods the mud's not far under the frozen crust.
I've got no "gut" feeling for what's coming this winter. (When it finally gets here) :D

Post by: mudfarmer on January 04, 2024, 03:54:02 PM
December 29 we found a tick on the dog and saw a mosquito flying around outside. Nothing is(was?) frozen much under the crust here either, I moved the mulch on the garlic 3 days ago to make sure it was not frost heaving and only the top 1" was frozen, wet underneath.

Is there somewhere I can look for rainfall #s if I'm too lazy to keep track?

I am trying to get a landing set up to haul out some timber and firewood.  Looked firm to get started but turned into a mud pit fast.  Gonna have to muck it and bring in some fill.  Dang!

Well sent 2 loads today so better than nothing but had to move the log pile about 200 yds further out in the field , lot of natural gas on this land so must be  lots under the old landing cause it sure is not freezing , At noon today I had lots of bugs out flying around

I'm 2 hrs east of Ed on the north shore of Lake O. It's all loam here and all mud. I had the covid 2 weeks before Christmas so nothing got done. I'm not even planning on going to cut any logs now. I have firewood logs scattered all over the place I think I'll clean up this year, buuuuuuut if it turns cold and snows you know I'll be cutting some logs.

Me too, a buddy has a weather station that records this.
Weather underground I think has a " history " or totals. Not sure if it will give you an annual amount, but it's free and chances are that there's a local neighbor who sends his info to them.

I don't know how this will work, it's a very long URL, but if it works, click on it and then on the page that come up make sure "Weather Stations" and "temerature/wind" are checked. You can move the map around and zoom in and out and find a recording station near you. Each one will have a 'history page' and you can pick the readings for any day they have data.
here goes nuttin'

Hey, thanks that works and I already use wunderground! The closest station is not at all close though so we can't really rely on it for current temps or anything but forecast really. I guess we are not too lazy, only average lazy for the area  ;D

Forester says hurry up and wait, keep staying out of the woods. 40s coming mid week

Not sure if I got enough years left in me to allow the natural ebb and flow of seasonal changes to roll through their cycles.

Been a heck of a year dealing with wildfires (great for the natural progression of the boreal), to the epically crappy maple syrup seasons (personally speaking), to the super late formation of ice climbing formations (speaking purely recreationally).

I still rely on the ebb and flow of the rabbits.  They come in droves then get eaten by the coyotes.  Then they die off and the coyotes die off, then the rabbits thrive and multiply, then the coyotes thrive when the rabbits return.

Suppose it's age and grey hair, but am (regretfully) age that tempers my view.  Patience for the new seasons to come as they will.  The rabbits will thrive.  The coyotes will thrive.  Ice and cold (and frozen woodland) will return.

We as humans are impatient (and that's resonable and understood and okay).

But the bank isn't.

So we push on for better days knowing that what we do is important and critical.

and we push on....

We have had a very bad drought that nature seems intent on resolving this winter during the harvesting season.  Sigh.

We got mostly rain over the weekend, not the snows you got in NY/PA and northwards.  Like Ed we are supposed to get 2" more this week.  Our haul road has been ok but we've been getting 1-2" a week of rain since Thanksgiving and not it is starting to get damp.  Good site, but even an upland site gets damp.

Up here in north western Canada....Alberta to be exact..its been so warm..no snow..just had a half inch the other day, so it kinda looks like winter. Usually logging is going full swing but forestry has shut down a lot due to not enough frost..doing to much damage

You can throw only 2 inches of rain out the window and its still pouring hard here, have to see what we end up getting in the end but I'm thinking double at least, fields are flooded everywhere

It's quit raining or snowing for a minute but is to start again, Wind right now and for the rest of the day is 50 mph so that help speed up getting rid of this water  but if the wind stream ever switches to the south west we will be buried in snow

4.75 inches rain in 10 hrs melting 4 inches of snow on saturated ground.  Steady south wind at 50mph with gusts to 65 around 2-3am. It is flooded out there, and the basement.

@ehp (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1195) I thought you were basically across the lake from me. How did winter miss you. The storm went all the way to Maine. Looks like next week we'll be almost 0 for a few nights.

Oh yeah that is south of me. Weather is way different in southern michigan too. I actually prefer to work 1 1/2 hours south in drier winters. They don't get almost any snow down there. 4" and the towns will shut down.

The lake is pretty warm and our normal wind current comes from the lake which is good or bad cause if the temp is cold enough and big wind we get a ton of snow , but if you head north even 30 minutes its a total different weather pattern

Mill has kept me on sand ground. Trucks keep coming. Seems like a buyer has to have 4 times as much wood bought just for all the scenarios that arise throughout the year. In one way I'm glad I don't deal with that and land owners. But at some point I will try again I hope. Two more pieces to the puzzle first. One is on order. All I can do is run a Johnny cash operation  😂 and play it safe as I can.

Got cylinder back and in, they could not fix the new hoses they put the wrong ends on because the power was still out at shop. They got 2 out of 5 right with old hoses in hand... had one made elsewhere on way home but pockets were too light for the other. Rained all night anyway and a sloppy mess. Do not have to worry about 40,000 ft this week, It rained so much last week and the weekend that even the high ground is pretty well flooded so Im can drive the skidder on whatever ground that is not covered in ice cause there could be 2 inches to 3 feet of water under the ice and ground is soft under the ice  but have been cutting on the ice which there only is a couple inches of so have to becarefull and try not to break threw the ice

Speaking of rootball, Some poplar i pushed over getting the dirt reclaimed off it by my backhoe scissors.  Look at the fencepost sized taproot down about shin high.

The hole is 3ft deep and if i coulda freed the whole thing i bet total root mass about 10ft across. Had to fill the hole before the dozer could walk across pushing it out. Maybe 14" dbh.

well its cold but the ground in the bush is soft , cutting on about 4 inches of ice but the trees break threw that so by the time I get them out on the landing they are covered in dirt that has frozen so lots of filing , Yes I know if I had Barge's coin I should just buy a new tigercat setup and cut stuff up with that but I do not have Barge coin , I'm cutting on high ground not in swamps but we have had so much rain even the top of hills have water laying everywhere

Maybe you gotta cut some smaller trees if they are breaking 4" of ice and putting out your #s   ;D

Making me nervous, it is cold here but we got a lot of fluffy blanket snow. Moving finally this week  to winter only job but we don't get as much winter these days. Been cold here. Single digits. The forecast looks like nearly 40 next week. If it's only day time and a few days it shouldn't hurt much. Going from 20s to 0 I understand but then back up to 40 is crazy. In a weeks time.

Well, the freeze up was great while we had it but here comes the rain again.   Bummer.   Seen years like this before, warm and rainy all winter, dry and dust all summer.  Hope not.

It's so wet that Baillies is sending us trucks they are so short on logs.  They even raised prices, I don't think they can be making money at what they are paying.

It sure would be nice to get some snow pack, some frost in the ground, something... Got one hole that I am just sick of chucking corduroy in. Hardly any wood out that hasn't gone in a hole somewhere.

Well I think my cleared iPad is working like it should. Lets try a long one. We got caught off guard here a little. Kinda knew it could come with the warm weather we have. But not good when the hole state of loggers are scrambling to find a class A sand job and a low boy to move them. We had about a 3 day notice depending on what counties had to be dealt with. Some guys had to literally stop and move there machines cause theyd be trapped in do to weight restrictions.

Trying to cross an old skid trail with un-frozen ground did not work out well for me. I was able to winch myself out after many attempts.

Yikes - I guess I'm lucky to have some higher up solid ground. I was going to just push the "like" button but looking at your situation it just doesn't seem right.

Let's hope. I packed in a fresh trail today that I hope to start using. Had 6" to 8" of snow with a hard crust. There was one soft spot where I turned up dirt/mud that I would be better if it stiffened up some before I pull wood over it.

So last couple days have been unreal warm, friday was about 65F here and yesterday was close to that , have had some rain but not bad, It's to start turning colder here now , not very cold but at least freezing , it sure has been one screwed up winter or whatever you call this

So maybe our winter logging is over , sent the last 2 loads today and its suppose to start raining and rain alot next week and be up to about 50F

Sure looks bad, might have to give up cutting wood, XC skiing and making syrup, just go back to riding motorcycles all the time. Got out what I could last night, tapping last maples right now and it is already sloppy out.

Yep winter is basically over. Even if it shows again. I'm sure it will, but no way will it help. Actually with the low snow we've had the mud should be to a minimum. Already looks better than most springs.

We had a 40* drop down to 4* last night and no rain before that, but a slicking of freezing rain last night. The frost did not come out of the ground here at home so now that I am done with work for the morning it is time to head to the woods and see what conditions are like. Maybe get a few trees out :huh? This looks like the last possibility on frozen ground "for real this time"  ffcheesy

We are in a project outside Harpers Ferry and Thursday afternoon there was lightning and thunder, amazing show, sky turned blue/purple when the lightning went cloud to cloud.  Just a wild afternoon that kept me from working.  Didn't help our own mud situation, we maybe got .5 and inch of rain but it was unexpected and not needed.

Things were getting better with cold nights and drying in the afternoon.  My forest thinning project was progressing well. They were able to run the HydroAx in the mornings then hand cut as things softened up each day.  I would say after all the rain last night and going to 60 deg today it is shut down for a while.  Long range forecast looks like no more below freezing temps.  Even if we dip one night it will not matter. Since they can not cut April and May it could be Mid summer before they can get back at it.

Here to. But I think I've got the top soil worn out in my turn around. Find out tomorrow. Just keep giving it! Must be machine break down time. My buncher is out in the woods. Left it there last week. Hit a cradle knoll to hard with a tree in the head and blew something in the steering. Hoping it's a hose. Look at it better tomorrow. Always something when logging.

I hope you guys machines go well. I'm lucky enough to have enough machines and lack of employee I just go to the next seat to keep wood moving. That's what counts.

I agree FWJ, right now not having a harvester sort of kills the business proposition and the monthly payments...well they are not going down.

Good news is that I have a few days handfelling in front of bat restrictions for a development so that's good money and very simple.  I could use a winter of that work.  They don't have land disturbance permits (takes a year) but if the trees are there they have to wait to get the permits.  So, down come the trees.  High stumps requested by excavator drivers, no bending back.  Nice.

You guys can send me all the rain you want. It's scary dry around here for March, they just put a fire ban in place after a discarded cigarette started a bush fire up the road two days ago, 70 acres scorched, 4 vehicles and 6 outbuildings. Going to be a scary summer if we don't get some wet weather!

If you get the idea of building your own ark don't waste your time going to the library to borrow a book on how to build one.  Last I heard the book was out to a man named Noah and it was long overdue.
