Has anyone ever seen one of these used?

It is described in one of Underhill's books...basically it's a heavy piece of steel bar with a
mortice chisel at one end and a slick at the other..

Raphael

I've only seen them in late medieval illustrations, so there's no telling if the artist even got his representation of the technique correct.  It'd be fun to play with one and see what actually works.

Not sure if this info helps, but according to one search result it may also be called a "French twybill" (or just "twybill").
Sounds interesting!

Raphael

Actually on the twybill (twibil) the handle joins the blade in the center, like the weapon of similiar name (twi-bill) only a lot smaller and lighter.

Twubble with twybils?

Atwybil was typically a thin bladed morticing axe, I believe..

That's pretty much it, with a broader blade in line with the handle and a narower blade set 90 degrees to it.

IIRC one is illustrated in 'A Museum of Early American Tools' by Eric Sloane

I think you'ld have to blame David Gerrold for that.

I think I can thank Robert Heinlein's juvenile series for the fact I'm still alive and kicking.
