Ive been told that Silk Tree, aka memosa, is closely related to a cottonwood. Would anyone care to clear that response from my friend up for me as so to further my limited education on such matters?

Im smart enough to know that I dont know, ya know  :P

Not related in the least.  Mimosa is a legume and has a pod (think long pea pod) for a fruit.  Cottonwood is in the genus Populus.   Its relatives are the aspens and balsam poplar.

Mimosa also has a unique leaf, a bi-pinnate compound leaf.  Not too may of those in the tree world.  Cottonwood has a simple leaf.
