Title: Does model MS261C have m-tronic?
Post by: 4lane on February 07, 2018, 10:55:10 AM
I'm looking at a used MS261C. How can I tell if it has M-Tronic or not? I saw somewhere that the 'C' designation means it has m-tronic, but I've also seen where there was a 'C' model and a more expensive 'C-M' model. Can anyone help to clarify or let me know how I can physically tell if it has M-Tronic?

I see it does have a single position switch, instead of the normal two. Could this be the key to knowing it's an m-tronic? Thanks!

If it has carb adjustment screws, it's manual

If it has no carb adjustment screws it's m-tronic

if top cover has holes in it so you can adjust the carb it should have a standard carb on it , no holes then it should be M tronic as long as its got the proper top cover on it

Simple, M-Tronic saws have a three position master control lever: Start, Run, and Stop. Non-M-tronic saws have the traditional Choke, Half-Choke, Run, and Stop. Stihl salesman pointed this out to me.  Scott B.

I really like the 3 stage master control switch on my MS261CM.
No fiddling with that fast idle 4th step.
The Husqvarna 550XP with AutoTune has that 4th fast idle mode. A real annoyance after getting used to the 261CM.

The M in the model # stands for m-tronic. As in 261 CM. A 261c should not be m-tronic.

Stihl's website explains it all.

Now I'm confused. If you go to Stihl's  website and click on pro saws, the last sentence in the first paragraph explains what the letters in the model number mean. It says m means m-tronic.

I'm sure Ed and Joe know what they have, leaving me confused.

Can anyone explain this.

Perhaps Stihl changed their lettering system at some point. ???

On the side of the rewind housing it says 362c, on the powerhead plate/tag with the serial number it says 362 c-m. But when it was sitting on the shelf at the store the hand tag said it was just a 362 but it was miss labled and showed a cheaper price and a different size bar, so I ended up with $50 off the saw from a mistake.

I think the C on the saws rewind housing is just a shortened version for marketing and identification, plus save room.
Here's my MS261C with owner's manual that says MS 261 C-M.

Thanks guys, I'm deconfused now.

What I get out of this is that the sticker on the starter doesn't mean much in regard to m-tronic.

Yes, they are all labeled 261C on the recoil housing. Either pull the top cover and look for the wires or the lack of carb adjustment holes to indicate it is in all reality a C-M model. I have one and I'm pretty happy with it.
