Well it is getting to be that time of year for me to start planning my sawing project for this spring. This years sawmill project is for April 13 and 14th. I have not confirmed what all will take place at this project but I know there will be lots of information/knowledge shared and a good time had by all. The address is
1607 Capps Browning Rd.
Rentz, GA. 31075
I am open to some ideas as to what people would like to see this year. I have one recommendation from the Wood Doc about sawing structural pine which I think would be informative. Any other ideas are welcome.
Lets keep a head count as we go so I know how many chickens to get. ;D
Myself and one other makes 2
Goat and Kirk makes 4.
Nancy and I will make 6
I would like to attend, but right now it's too far out to be able to say yes or no. Goat - you got room for a hitch hiker?
You have room to land a helicoptor there??
4x4 - you must be making a ton of business to be flying your own helicopter!
Guess that LT70 Super is paying its way. 8)
I'm scheduled to be off but my work situation is very unclear at the moment. Maybe.
Savannahdan and Damma for 8
Vick an I will be there . I like doc's suggestion on the structural lumber.
I might come ;D
11
Teea and I will be there.
It'll be nice to thaw out for a bit!
fire_smiley
12 and 13
14 if my bride will behave herself this time. :D
My wife and would like to attend. That makes 16
well if wdh said he might come we might come ,,
I will be there and probably have one other friend coming. So 2 for me. so 18.

Actually I was thinking of doing just that.
We have a ride we call the pilgrimage where we ride down skyline drive and the blue ridge parkway and then make our way over to Tybee Island near Savannah Stopping in Springfield to visit our mother and grandparents grave on the way. I'll map it out and see what we can do.
Jon
Well even if you don't make it for the project let me know when you do that ride. I'll ride over on my bike and buy you lunch in Springfield area. I used to plant lots of pines over in that area.
Springfield is just a couple of waggles of a goat's tail away.
Absolutley!

I have been by your place a few times. Just never had time to stop.
There is a camp ground about about 20 miles south. There is several hotels by the interstate just 6 miles north. I have some room for a few campers if they are self contained.
Martha and I are coming. We will bring the BBQ.
I plan to attend and hopefully bring JMoore but will have to wait a while to confirm.

I believe that is Yellowhammer's wife Martha, with two (names anybody?) talented musicians as bookends.
This year, I see that YH is bringing the BBQ, such a good plan.
He must've heard of the "BBQ controlled explosion" of '16
Good times!
Robert the project would not be the same without Martha. You are a lucky man.

The musical skills you guys have is admirable. I have said for a long time that someday I want to learn to play the guitar - honestly though holding a tune in a bucket is beyond a long shot for me.

Call Leader Evaporator in Swanton, VT at 802-868-5444 and you can order some genuine sap buckets and then you will have something to carry a tune in.

Thats a mini kiln Dr. Gene Wengert put together to display for an example
That was a small scale solar kiln the Wood Doc was generous enough to bring one year. We couldn't get the temp up high enough to roast a goat though.
Looka that !
Go fishing for a day, and missed a question from WV Sawmiller.

YES! A BIG ISSUE!! 😂😂😂😂
Absolutely not a problem. You don't even need the tent. You can crash with the goat if you can take the smell.
I don't worry too much about my reputation but I don't know if even I could stoop that low. :D

For the record, here is a pic of a piece that was made from the last quartersawn white oak that we sawed at Project two years ago. This customer bought almost every piece of that lumber.

All I can say is WOW!
Danny, that QS white oak is awesome. Do you or Jake have a log and a plan for this project?

We just need to make sure Jake is using a non toxic blade lube, or maybe one that's alcohol based. :D Do you think he could Bibby the corn off the cob? That would be a good demo.
We're going to have so much traffic on my road they're going to think it's the watermelon 500 nascar race.

I don't know about the watermelon 500 but the project is the daytona for sawyers in the south.
Slider, I second that. If you own a portable mill you should go. 8)
Heck you don't have to have a mill at all to come.

Normally try to kick things off around 9:00 each day. Where this is a educational type event I don't try to hold a set time schedule. If someone has some serious questions and we need to stop then that is what we do. Sometimes the questions bring up more questions and it takes a bit to get things started back up.

Having an MRI done on my ankle Thursday morning.
It's not healing. Was at the doctor this morning at 9 and that was his orders.
Hope I don't have to have surgery.
DanG David that don't sound good on the ankle part. Good luck to ya.
David, is that emergency surgery? You can still go. I can drive to Rock Hill and chauffeur you if you like (from Salters, SC). I can probably find you a wheel chair too.
I see an operators seat in your future.
Well, when the doc orders, you've gotta listen.
There's only two of those ankle things down there, and you'll be happier with two of 'em working and in good order.
The operator's seat in Jake's skidsteer would help keep the weight off your ankle.
;)

I have had some folks contacting me wanting to know what they can bring. Well here is a list and y'all pick one if you are so inclined and post it on here. This way we don't have several bringing the same thing.
1. Soda pop. I could use one more individual to bring a few more cases.
2. Tater chips.
3. Paper plates, plastic ware, cups.
4. Bottled water.
5. Dessert.
6. Side dishes.
I might come up with something else in a bit so stay tuned.. :D
Put me down for bottled water. 10 cases? Or more?
David please inform us how in the world a MRI on your foot effects you running your mouth picking on us over the weekend. :D
David, I really hope you can make it. You're an easier target than most of these folks. ;D
Sure hope everything works out with that ankle. Surgery is no fun.

Scott, I will miss seeing you and learning from you. Heck, I have three previous commitments this weekend (sister's anniversary of coming to U.S., wedding that two of my daughters are in and an annual fundraiser for our FFA chapter) that I will probably catch some heat for missing but... as Dang says, If the creek don't rise, I'll be there.
Robert, it will be interesting to compare the readings of different meters.
Poston, Pineywoods mentioned that you may need some crutches. If you need some and you will be at Jake's, let me know today and I will bring you an unused pair of aluminum ones.
Plan to hit the road around 4 a.m.
OFor some reason this project brings a Charlie Daniels song to mind.
The Goat went down to Georgia. He was lookin' for a leg to heal.
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind. He was willing to make a deal
When he came across this young Yellowhammer sawin' on a mill and runnin' it hot.
And the Goat jumped upon a hickory stump and said "Hammer, let me tell you what."
"I guess you didn't know it, but I'm a sawmill operator, too.
And if you'd care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you.
Now you run a pretty good mill, boy, but give the Goat his due.
I'll bet a LT70 of gold against your ankles 'cause I think I'm better than you."
The man said, "My name's Yellowhammer, and it might be a sin,
But I'll take your bet; and you're gonna regret 'cause I'm the best RRQS there's ever been."
Hammer, tension up your band and run your mill hard.
'Cause Hell's broke loose in Georgia and the Goat deals the logs.
And if you win you get this shiny mill made of gold,
But if you lose the Goat gets your bones.
The Goat started up his mill and he said, "I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his blade as his slab pile began to grow.
And he pulled the head across the logs and it made an evil hiss.
And a band of members filled with purple drank joined in and it sounded something like this.
When the Goat finished, Hammer said, "Well, you're pretty good ol' son,
But sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done."
"Fire on the Mountain." Run, boys, run!
The Goat's in the house of the Customsawyer;
Chicken's on the fire cookin’ up slow.
Jeffie, does your dog bite? No, child, no.
The Goat bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.
And he pulled that golden 70 around and hooked it to Hammers cleet.
Hammer said, "Goat, just come on back. If you ever wanna try again,
I done told you once—you son of a DanG—I'm the best that's ever been."
And he played:
"Fire on the Mountain." Run, boys, run!
The Goat's in the house of the Customsawyer;
Chicken's on the fire cookin’ up slow.
Jeffie, does your dog bite? No, child, no.
Maybe you musical types can put this to music for Maxbars to put on the video. Wish I could have made it down, but maybe next year.

Hard to walk at an angle or the side of a hill.
Hopefully he can pull some of this fluid off my ankle.

Thanks Caveman. If I make it I should be slow fine. smiley_old_guy

The Goat's in the house of the Customsawyer;
Chicken's on the fire cookin' up slow.
Jeffie, does your dog bite? No, child, no.
The Goat bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.

That's freakin' hilarious!!!
Treehack that was awesome! Between that and the Customsawyer troll with the mill this is just too funny! :D
Great song. :D
Friday 10 PM, I'm sure the Project is still going on. I left at 2 PM. Gene the Wooddoc with his magic stick, discussed grading structural lumber and how to get the best boards out of pine logs. Nice pizza lunch and good fellowship. Going back for day two, tomorrow. Nice job Jake. (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/25201/project2018.JPG?easyrotate_cache=1523670480)

Dr Eugene with the magic stick in action. The discussion was about cutting decisions and how to get the most quality lumber out of a log.
Customsawyer Jake isn't shy about showing what went wrong with some of his milling results.
Eugene led the talking about old growth and new growth causing sweep in this board and made a suggestion to market the board to Canadians (me) for snow-ski products. :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/19307/20180413_142525.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1523705468)
Jake Dean, our host, and David Poston, aka Poston Widehead, doing a bit of post game debrief on how this board got shredded in Jake's planer.
Special techniques and secret tricks were shared, for sure.
The Georgia Project isn't all business and shredded lumber.
Friday had a relaxed and informal atmosphere, and the day slipped by quickly, like this:
People would introduce themselves and catch up on events and friendships for an hour.
Then Jake would fire up a machine (sawmill, jointer, planer, whatever), and people would gather around.
Questions, answers and guesses would follow.
Then, and hour later something else would fire up and people would gather.
Seems to me that the best get togethers would include ear plugs and flying wood chips.

In the evening, there's always a bonfire which was tended to by Mrs Martha Yellowhammer
Its Saturday morning and there's another full day of tips, tricks and camaraderie coming up.
I'll post some more photos and description, after I recover. ;)
Looks like everyone is having a great time. I hope everyone learns something valuable to them on this excursion.
I will not mention violations of the dress code. I assume out of sympathy for a sore hoof nobody objected to wearing of outlawed Clemson shirts. :D
I just got home I am mentally whipped!
I decided not to stay through Saturday night as they are calling for some wicked storms to be coming through starting tonight....high winds, heavy rain, lightning and tornado warnings.
When the weather is like this, I had rather be with Julie and Paul than Jake and Danny. :D :D :D
As usual I had a great time. Custom Sawyer Jake really knows how to make ya feel at home, a true friend to all......but if you holler at me 1 more time in public... bat_smailey..... :D :D :D Luv ya brother!
I wouldn't trade these people for anything. The food was excellent....BBQ, grilled chicken, burgers, sausage dogs, sausage biscuits, nanner pudding, cakes, pies and it goes on and on.
Lots of FF members, some I met for the first time but most of them I've known for years.
It was real good to see everybody especially DanG.....in his own way...he is a hoot!!! :D :D :D.....Ya just gotta know him. :D
So you may wonder.....all this mentally whipped you????? NOPE!
First thing I did when I left Jakes was to stop at the service station beside the motel I stayed at to fill up with DIESEL.
As soon as I pulled up to the pump to get DIESEL.... this guy walks up and starts talking to me about my truck.
So you know me, I start running my mouth to him while I'm pumping GAS.....in the #2 DIESEL tank on my truck. smiley_clapping
It dawns on me after 11 gallons. :o :o :o
I STOP pumping and this guy is still talking. I act normal and hang the nozzle back up like nothing happened not wanting him to know what a DUMB ... I was.
As the conversation starts to come to an end...I had already told him I was from out of state.....and I had to get back on the road. He said by the way.....where you from.....
I said NEW YORK... :D :D :D :D :D......I swear I did. :D :D :D :D
I got in my truck and went down the road and filled the #1 tank with DIESEL and had to stop and fill it again about half way home.
Now I have to drain tank #2 and refill it with DIESEL!!!!!
At his point I would kick my own butt but only have 1 ankle to stand on. :D :D :D
Poston, dont drain, add atf
Yep. Add a quart of atf then top the tank off with DIESEL and let it go. You'll do just fine.
Sooner or later I'm going to make one of these events. Love the pics.
You're lucky you have two tanks to switch in between that kinda makes a bad situation not so bad..
Andries I am curious to hear more about this whatever machine, sounds interesting, does it make sawdust or shavings or whatever??
btw up here in the north alot of guys cut their diesel with gas to keep the diesel from gelling, only difference is the ratio. One guy I was talking to said he puts approx 10gal of gas in with 90 gallons of fuel oil on his t/t. Personally I cut with kero and then add a lubricator like howes, two stroke oil or spittle.
I try to be aware that I don't put diesel in my gas tank. Something I might do when I get hot-stupid. And I don't have to get very hot for that to kick in.
There were people taking lots of pictures but some pics will not be posted for a couple weeks due to their traveling plans so stay tuned. 😊
Like the others said, add Howes or another lubricant, even two cycle oil, and fill with diesel, you will be fine. I have personally done it and have a buddy in Kansas that does it to cut his winter fuel, he farms 5,000 acres so he runs a lot of fuel.
New York - Love it!!!
Kinda looks like Phish will be swimming home.
There are some really bad storms coming through the south right now.
Hope those guys get home safely.
You guys from NY use gas to thin diesel........Never heard of it,kero, yes, but never gas.
Yes,I hope all get home safe.
I like pictures too. ;D
We're driving in rain now - heading Northwest to Atlanta.
Canada is a long way off.
If it turns to snow, I'll be okay - I'm used to that.
If it turns to tornados, well . . we're not used to that.
We'll find a place to hunker down and wait it out.
Wow what a great weekend. Many thanks to all that pitched in to make it what it is. This project is only as great as those that attend it. THANK YOU.
Poston when it comes to your truck I don't know what size your fuel tank is but if memory serves it isn't but about 12-14 gallons. I would recommend removing as much of the gas as you can. Blending fuel is one thing but trying to run mostly gas with just some oil or AT fluid in it would be risky.
Great event, first time attending. Jake was a great host, The education of a gathering like this is priceless. I added a lot to my tool box over the weekend,
I have a lot of footage captured and should have a good compilation video finished in a few days.
David ,i'm with Jake on this one i would drain it to be safe.
I'm gonna start a new thread in General to keep this THE GEORGIA PROJECT thread.
Please add your remarks there about GAS IN DIESEL.
Thanks, Goat
If it has an electric fuel pump you can just unhook the line and turn on the key and pump it out.
I've got some pics on my phone from this weekend. I'll upload them tomorrow if I have time.
I had a great time at the sawing project.I was debating on whether to go or not,but boy am I glad that I went.I got to meet a bunch of members and Jake and his wife made me feel right at home. Now when when i see some of your posts I can put a face with it and that is so much better. I got to learn some new sawing techniques and have a great time while doing it. Jake thank you very much!! PS The food was great also.
Martha and I made it home and we had a great time at the Project. Lots off first class people, lots of first class food, and lots of first class fun. Thanks Jake, Tammy, and all who helped and participated. The diversity and knowledge of the attendees is amazing, I always learn things when I attend. Great job.

Andries, meeting you was such a pleasure. Wow, what a great guy! I've made many new friends over the past few years because of this forum. And I've personally got to meet many of you because of a generous man named Jake Dean. Jake, thank you for everything you do for us big fella! Thank you for always taking the time to answer any questions I have and for simply putting up with me! I can hardly wait so see you all again. We are all so fortunate to have this forum and those like Jake Dean with us because how else would we all get together!? Anyways, it was a blast. Here are a few random pics I took and not taking the time to caption them from my cell phone. Good Night friends!

The "Three Wise Men of the RRQS"
Yellowhammer, WDH and CustomSawyer.
Thank you Jake for hosting the Georgia Project, again.
It is well worth every mile to hang out with all the sawyers from the Deep South.
. . and thank you to 'all y'all' that repeated what you just said, to the guy from Canada that was trying to translate understand comprehend the local language. :D ;) :D
As always, Jake hosted a great event. And as always, it was a fine thing to meet back up with old friends and make some new ones, and get an opportunity to learn more than I knew before. Thanks again Jake and Tammy for putting this on! Already looking forward to the next one.
The Yin and the Yang. The Yin is the short one, and the Yang is the tall one.

Thanks for noticing. I've been working at it for awhile
thanks for sharing those pics, Jake has an awesome set up, gave me lots of ideas for my own log yard.
After 8 hours or reviewing/editing footage I finally finished the video from last weekends sawing.
I should have it uploaded by 9pm this evening, I will post a link when it is online.
Nathan,
:P
I would like to thank Jake and Tammy for opening up there home and making everyone feel so welcome. Great food, fellowship and weather. As usual there was lots to see and learn. Every year Jake gets more neat toys. I didn't get to stay last year to see the RRQS so it was great to see the masters making it look easy. I really appreciate Gene taking the time so share his knowledge too. Was nice to get to make some new friends and see some old ones again.

holy cow...8 hours!! I figured that since you already knew your 123's I'd make sure you got them ABC's lol lol
But no great job on the video I'm really glad you made it.
That is some great video work. Thank you for all the time spent in editing.
It shows the quarter sawing really well, a group of people having some fun, and a bunch of great BBQ being tended to.
Heck, even the music was great!
Well done 123maxbars.

Thanks a lot 123 for taking the time. Now you have made me late this morning cause you know I had to watch it. lol
Great job on the video. I think I will stick to sawing.
I've heard about it, I've read about it, I've seen still photo's of the process, but watching that RRQS actually happen was awesome. Getting to see and hear WDH in action, priceless.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful video. I even saw a DanG! 8)
Great video! Hope you don't mind if we share it?
Great video, Great Video, Great Video.

Doing the RRQS in front of a crowd is always fun, especially with this log as it had a lot of twist, which makes it sometimes pretty hard to stay in in the fleck. However, with Jake driving the mill and WDH there, it was a slam dunk, and the boards coming off were incredible. Zero guess, zero stress quarter sawing.
The whole Project was great, the food was great, and the people were amazing. Jake has a great place for doing this with all the equipment and room for a great time.
We had a great time!
What a pleasure to see old friends and meet new ones.
Jake's place is a sawmillers dream, he is really living the life!
We enjoyed some good food, good camaraderie and the weather was perfect.
Every FF event I attend I come away with a renewed sense of what a great group of folks we have here.
I have to take some time to upload a few pictures.
Jon
Nice video
It was great to watch
Nice video!
Looks like you all had another great time. Thanks for the pictures and video to enjoy from afar.
Nathan. Great job on the video. Definitely one of your best. If anyone hasn't done it yet you should Subscribe to 123Maxbars feed on youtube. He has lots of videos on sawmilling and woodworking.
Look like a good time by yall. 8) 8)

You will have to lift someone with the Cat so we can have aerial shots of the Northern Project.
I nominate 4x4 for the task he's young and knows how to run his cellphone camera well :D
That will work. 4x4 has always had his head in the clouds :D.
Here is DanG and Deese parlaying.

Deese beat DanG to the draw. But my money is still on DanG. :)

One of my older (87) neighbors in WV will walk up, shake my hand and say "Now which one are you?"

The first flitches to come off were heavaly spalted.
I hope someone is going to make something out of that!

There was lots of oohing and ahing going on when those first boards came off the mill.

That's about all I have.
We sure did have a good time.
Chris and I checked the weather and saw a big storm heading our way from the west so we changed our plans from a leasurly ride north and east up through Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia, and made a run out 77 to 95 and straight home. We got home at noon on Sunday. We only had to ride 30 miles in the rain but the temperature dropped from 70 down to 45 by the time we pulled in. But that's one of the things that riding is all about.
Jon ;D
weekendsawyer,just say,I'm the good looking one. ;D
I enjoyed meeting Chris. You'll have to bring him again next time.
Good job 123 thanks for taking the time to show this .
My friend Sammy made a couple of pens with the QS Sycamore that Danny gave him. They turned out pretty good. One had some spalting in it.
