Title: favorite logging saw
Post by: ranger on August 04, 2002, 10:25:29 AM
I am a Alaska logger just wondering what you people out there consider to be the best saw for falling and bucking. all the trees we log are spruce 12"-36" diameter. We use stihl 036 and 046 saws. the 046 is a great saw but I am a husky man. Would like to pick up another saw for myself but can't decide between the husky 372xp or 385xp with 28" bar. What do you think!       :)

Well if it was me, a Walkerized 372 would fit the bill nicely!

Hello guys,
My favorite logging saw's are my old 064 w/36",and my new 385XP w/a 32",I think next I will be buying a new 066 or 088 for just falling.

We are logging below you here in BC.We run 066's and a couple 046.They have been great saws.A lot of the fallers here have sent their saws to the Island to be Walkerized.

In the late 70s we ran 051s and 075s.Then in the early 80s,we switched to Husky 2100s.We are happy with the Stihls right now,but going back to a Husky would take only a split second if Stihl started to go down hill.

G'day Guys,

I love my 038, but if I were to go full time felling, I think the 046 would be the choice, if the timber wasnt too large.  Maybe have an 088 for the large stuff!
Cheers

395 Husky but I've come to covet a 372 that doesn't belong to me.

I am not a logger, but can't resist a good saw. I picked up a used 372 and have been nothing but happy with it. I then found details on how to open the muffler up and got even better results.
My neighbor is a faller and I found out he recently switched for the 046 to the 372. After many years of good service, our local Stihl dealer went down hill, more like jumped off a cliff.
Anyway, my next saw will most likely be a 395 or an 066 for more heavy duty milling.

For anything over 24' I use my 066, which has been a cutters dream come true.  For limbing and smaller, I use one of the tw 044's all three have 36" bars.  I do use an 025 for around the mill, to but knots, trim some of the lumber as it coms off the mill or trim some of the scrap to fit better into the wood jig or the chipping jig.

If your falling trees in powder snow, I believe the Stihl 066 with an Arctic kit and heated handlebars is the ticket.  Runs well in extremely cold and powdery conditions. I had a lot of trouble with the  372's icing up and stalling.

Russ,

Husky has a lifetime warranty on their ignition.  Take it to the dealer and get it fixed for free.

I am not a 'professional' logger but I do cut a lot of wood from felling to bucking to firewood in the daily maintenance of my tree farm.  All my work is perfromed on hardwood trees with the average tree being 22" dbh and 80' tall.
I have used Stihl chainsaws for the past 20 years.  Up till now my favorite saw was an 038 PRO.  I cut a lot of wood with that unit.  I now have a new favorite saw  8)  I recently purchased an MS 440 Magnum.  Wow!  What a saw!  The 440 is almost two pounds lighter and has noticeably more grunt than the 038s, both the PRO and the AV Farm Boss.  The upgraded oil and fuel caps and the side adjustment chain tensioner are icing on the cake :) :)
