And for the next trick, what order were they put down?

OK that puts 2, 6 or 4 on the bottom. Right?

The way I figured it out, they are all square.

They are all square. That's how you can tell what position they must be in.

I think I know but will not admit it if wrong!    ;D

Well then, I reckon a rectangle is now a square, who would've figured?   I always thought a square had equal sides?  Must be another head scratcher for me, not that unusual, happens everyday around here,

The squares are stacked up on top of each other. Think like sheets of paper. You can tell what order they are in by how much of each square is exposed.

I have the answer mathmatically figured out, but the realist in me thinks that the question is incorrect.  Assuming all squares being equal in size, how can square #7 overlap square #8?  Just sayin'.
My father once said, "This is my son who wanted to grow up and become a doctor.  So far, he's only become a doctor."

Dave Shepard

#7 is on top of #8, it's on top of #6. ;)

#7 is not on top of #8.  It abuts the side of #8 but does not overlap it.

Sorry, typo. #7 is on top of #6, not on top of #8. I reversed the 6 and the 8.

When the puzzle says one on top of the other, I envisioned that they are like a deck of square cards, with the cards displaced, but still holding a "common" thread at some point.  I fully realize that, in this solution, that can not be so.  I think it muddies my interpretation of the words "one on top of the other", that's all.  I did not say that #7 overlaps or should overlap #8.  I said that it did not.
My father once said, "This is my son who wanted to grow up and become a doctor.  So far, he's only become a doctor."

Dave Shepard

I took it to simply mean that each card is overlapped by the next card placed in the puzzle.

Not sure, looks to me like 5 overlaps 2 and some other number is wrong, can't remember or get back to the picture.  I still think i'm looking at the bottom of the pile so it's 1  :D
