I've been seriously considering buying a riehl edger with no power and putting an electric motor on it. It would have to be single phase. Anyone know what size motor I could get away with putting on it?

You could do about half the gas engine rating.  I was looking at them - they sell it with 13hp or 20hp gas.  So a 7 to 10 hp electric, kind of big for single phase but doable (240v) for a 7 - maybe?

My 25" planner has a 7hp, single phase, farm duty, motor on it, does fine.

10 hp single phase is 44 FLA, which is full load amps. I don't know what the inrush current is on startup. The inrush on a 7 hp on a big sawdust blower was 140. :o 10 on an edger is doable, but you are going to need be down around 20 fpm feed, depending on what you are cutting.
