Thought you all might be interested in how I move logs in the north.
I've been salvaging a bunch of blow down from the back 40 this winter. It is impressive what you can move with a snow machine in the right conditions. All you need are a packed trail, good skidding sled, a Skidoo (definitely not a Polaris or Arctic Cat) and cold temps you can move very large logs. And last but not least you need a very strong back. :D
I also have some videos but can't figure out how to post them.

Looks like you're doing it, and well; thanks for the photos!

What do you have for a sled?  Sold my Mach1 when we moved so have not kept up to date with the latest.  617cc of reed valve powered raw muscle - that didn't do well in powder, but rode like it was on rails with carbides on her.  As far as videos go, download it to YouTube and post the link using the link icon in the toolbar above.

Haha that's awesome! Shoot maybe my old Yamaha SRX 600 will be able to pull like an old farm plow horse... It certainly takes a plow horse to pull start the engine on those extra cold days

Oh, we've already been indoctrinated by Quebecnewf. He's way out there on the north shore of the St Lawrence in Quebec on Harrington Island. Has to cross sea ice to get to his logging operation another 10 km north. ;D

Have fun and play safe. Go easy on that back. ;)

The right conditions like gentle terrain and frozen layer of base snow make it possible.
This winter has been good for it with that frozen base layer . I've made use of my ARCTIC CAT panther  8)
to haul some bucked up firewood out on a sled but don't think it would haul that log you got behind
a SKI-Doo. Like the picture. Nice to play in the woods in the winter with a sled.
I did try pulling some logs one winter but without some type of arch it didn't work.
Them Quebecans that been posting here got that business figured out also.

What I like is the time of the year and the conditions. Everything is so clean.

Starting to feel you are a polaris fan.  :D
I'm not loyal to any brand, but do enjoy the little rivalries.
Back on track... nice pics, and sled! Is the sled made of aluminum? Any issues with snow sticking?

I have a 2011 skidoo Tundra with a 600 ACE four stroke engine. The four stroke engines and clutches pull circles around the two strokes when it comes to towing. Used to have a 550 fan and all it did was burn pistons. I can't speak from experience about the touring sleds or the hot rod sleds but I can tell you without any doubt that skidoo dominates the utility sled line in Canada.
And yes going down hills is scary. Start slow and don't brake hard enough to slide the track sideways. I have truck studs in my track and it makes a huge difference on ice and hard pack. Skidoo's utility line of machines come with reinforced paddles predrilled for auto studs.

truck studs as you call it would be a casmo ice ripper track. used to be camoplast. are they as good as push thru studs   no  but they do help.

Some of the logs we have hauled so far this winter .

We run Yamaha

We have two other piles a little smaller at another location .

Nice log there behind that Ace . Tail dragging is ok but not good for big loads

You tear up your trail

Quebecnewf, I thought I was doing good with my log pile but you got me beat. How do you get them stacked so high? What Yamaha machine are you running? I've heard good things about Yamaha 4 strokes for utility sleds.
Your right about the tail dragging it does tear up the trail. However we had a melt and the trail is rock hard now so not to bad of a problem. My trails are basically just windy little trails through the woods so would be difficult to pull a bobsled type of skidding sled.
What type of wood do you primarily cut? I have mostly white spruce, quaking aspen and a few decent birch.

Long logs like you have there must be tail dragged if path is twisty for sure .

I run VK 540 two stroke and a VK Prof 4 stroke .

We pile them with a small  gas powered capstan winch .

We cut balsam fir and spruce . Mostly gets sawed into 2x material .

Been at this now 28 years as a part time passion
