The engine is a military surplus opposed 4 cyl 84 cid, just like a small aircraft engine.

What do you mean by 'Opposed" ?

The wood looks good.

My LT30 manual of about the same vintage as Jeffs will go to 1inch.

I don't think it can be the same year as mine, unless they change the mills in the middle of the same year. That was the standard design back then. I think they changed it the next year, at least I think that is what I was told.

looks like lighter, bet they will burn good.

My 84 lt30 will cut down to 2". The 88 lt40hd will cut down to 1". How heavy is that engine? I was told that the mast on the old mills was not heavy enough to put a 3 cyl kubota diesel >:(. So I replaced the old Kohler  k321 with a Kohler 18vtwin.

Jeff cant argue with you about that.  Also if I remember your mill has a tube to throw the sawdust away from the mill.  Mine has only has a screen under the band drive wheel throwing the sawdust straight down.  Bought mine at an estate and havn't checked wih woodmizer about the exact year.

Mine has a build date 0286. Found this little bit of info on the engine:

Ok, regarding the Military Standard 4AO-84 engine, it is rated at 20hp, by the U.S. Government (that 10,000ft item, as mentioned earlier), 35 hp Factory, at 3600 rpm. As it comes out of the crate, she's a heavy beastie, and, with some minor unbolting of unnecessary items, drops to 145#, with oil.

It's lighter alright.  Tree probably had a hard life.  I've seen a few with that much  lighter heart but not many.  It's going to be hard to nail up and may have to be pre-drilled to avoid splitting.
