Title: Anything to do around Dover Delaware ?
Post by: WV_hillbilly on May 19, 2003, 08:25:47 PM
Anyone know of  any good places to eat at around Dover Delaware ?  Also any good places to fish that is not to far away from there ?  I was looking for something to do on Sat may 31 as I  will be going to the May 30 Craftsman truck race and the June 1 cup race at Dover Downs. Does anyone live close ?

WV, you could drive down to Lews DE and take the 70 minute ferry across to Cape May NJ. Or you can drive south along the coast and stop in at some of the beaches but be careful some of the guys are a little too friendly! Either way is a nice ride and should be done. You can go out deep sea fishing on a head boat (cheap and mabe crowded) or a charter (expensive but IMHO worth it).

Let us know how it goes and make sure to post som pictures!

Weekend Sawyer,

I don't know but very little about fishing or boats,  but I think the correct name is 'John' boat,  not 'Head' boat. :D :D :D

Mark,

Seems like I heard they moved those cliffs over to the other bank.  I was wanting to go dive off of them.  You've got quite a memory to recall that that is one of my favorite hobbies--------the other one is telling tall tales :-[

Depends on how far you want to drive to go fishing.  Rehobeth Beach is about 1 hour away.  That's the place with the "friendly" people.  Things to do:

http://www.beach-fun.com/

For Lewes, DE try this link:  http://www.beach-net.com/TownsLewes.html

I haven't been to too many bad restaurants in the area.  As long as you like seafood, they're all good.

If you drive along the ocean between Rehobeth and Ocean City, MD, you'll see a couple of concrete towers along the beach.  These were used during WWII to spot U boats.  There is one sunk off of the coast just a little south of Ocean City.

You should go to Ocean City for the White Marlin Festival in August.  I've seen top prizes in the $100,000+ range.  It costs quite a bit just to enter.

I'm sure Gordon could fill you in on great places to go.

Weekend                                                                                           I hear ya, I 've only went fishing on a head boat once and vowed to never do it again.I like the charter idea though. The funniest thing that happened on that trip was a guy on on side of the boat catching one guy  on the other side under the boat. They were both yelling FISH ON and pulling their arms off but no one was gaining any ground. The first mate must have seen this type of rodeo before cause he told one to let out line while the  other reeled in until 2 baits showed up. ::) . I don't care for the beaches  . A 6'3" 280 lb. guy in a speedo should be illegal I think. :D

Noble                                                                                           they are called head boats  ! :P

Thank's I will let you all know how it turns out with some pics.

Heay WV, Don't think I'm snubbing you. I would have liked to invite you over for dinner while you are on your way to DE but I am going to be down in Georgia on a motorcycle trip. Weather permitting.

By the way what route are you taking?

Weekend Sawyer it would have to  be breakfast  anyways if you were going to be there. I should be going around DC at about 9 am   maybe next time we can meet up. We will be taking I-68 to DC. I can hardly wait to go there as  we have made one trip a year to a different track to watch a NASCAR race for the last 5 years.

 Heay DanG,

Since we are going to be on motorcycles it will be verry weather dependant.

Thursday evening we are targeting Typee Island Georgia. Just before you get there is our favorite seafood restaurant called Williams. I have been going there since I was a kid.

Friday we are going to stop by Springfield and visit the family cemetery and then head north by northwest.
That evening we should be somewhere around northern Gerogia or western South Carrolina where Saturday morning we will pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway and ride it all the way to Skyline drive and ride that to Front Royal Va and then home by Sunday evening.

At this point It looks like the weather is against us but if it is only a little drizzly we will probably go anyway.

Jon, I've eaten at Williams Seafood a number of times, myself. It has been a great spot for a lot of years. Tybee Island is a neat place, too. My daughter lives in Savannah, so we get over that way a bit.  We went to a popular place on Tybee recently, called "The Shrimp Shack", that wasn't worth the time it took to get there. The food was bland and uninteresting, and it cost me over a hundred bucks to get out the door. >:(  It's one of those yuppie places for folks that don't know no better.
Another neat seafood place is just outside of Charleston. It is on the island where the old ship museum is. Can't remember the name of it, but it is on a canal. It is a 3 story affair with decks on the upper levels, overlooking the shrimp docks on the canal. Makes for a nice relaxing spot to eat some great seafood.
No use to worry about the weather forecasts until you're ready to leave. They don't have much luck with long-range forecasting, hereabouts. :)

The bar in Williams is, or looks like, the whole back half of a sport fishing boat and you sit around the outside of it in fighting chairs. I kept looking over at my brother (there were 2 of them with me there) and saying "Thems Fightin Words!" The barmaid finally asked why I kept doing that. I said that it seemed like the thing to do when you are sitting in a fighting chair!

Impressed is not the word you could use to describe the look on her face.

I can give you a forcast for the Blueridge Parkway-------It's gonna be beautiful!  The Azalias and Rhododendrons will be magnificent about then.   8)

Noble, I just looked at your tagline and remembered the truck that doesn't have reverse and that switchback of a hole in the fence- I had to laugh all over again.  How you managed to avoid the temptation to get me behind the wheel somehow and set me into that switchback I will never know! Of course, it could be that you knew you'd have to have something on hand to yank it back around. I still wish I'd tried to make it, but I know it would've taken me about 4 tries each way to get it right. They'd love that for a driver's test...when we took the AVOC course fror driving an ambulance the course was much like that. First you had to go through it forward, and then backwards. It was fun..of course, the ambulances did have working reverse gear.. :D :D :D

Hay hillbilly just found out about you asking about Dover thanks to Ron for sending me a private message. I live just a few miles from dover and work my day job in Smryna.

Ok for a fishing spot just head a few miles east and Delaware bay is just waiting for you with a bunch of inlets and small bridges to get the hook wet, hit the tide right and you can end up with a good meal.

Good places to eat. Seafood--Shuckers pier 13 it's within walking distance of the track and often has a two to three hour wait on race weekends. Sambos in lipsic, that is up route 9 about 7 miles(had crabs and steamed shrimp there two weeks ago and it was some good eatin. Boondocks in Smryna is also a really good seafood eat.

Now if you like dirt track racing Sat night in Delmar is a real fun time. But before you hit the dirt track go to the old mill crabhouse (also located in Delmar) and get a good seafood meal, it's all you can eat costs a few bucks but well worth the money in my opinion.

There are a bunch of outlet stores less than an hours drive south at the beach if your interested in shopping. Route one south will take you there to the ferry and beaches as well.

here are a few cameras around this areahttp://www.dmv.com/cameras/index.cfm

one local paperhttp://www.delawareonline.com/newsjournal/

and another http://www.newszap.com/dover/

Dirttrack racing link http://www.delawareracing.com/

The outlaws just ran there a couple of weeks ago for the first time and put on quite a good show.

and another link to all the tracks in DE http://chasinracin.com/track-locator/rtl_links.php?action=1&state=DE

Let me know what interests you and I'll try to be more helpful Dont overlook downtown dover alot of history and also quite alot going on during race week downtown.

Well like anywhere else there are a few choices in sporting goods and if something does strike your fancy there is no sales tax in the state of Delaware so that could end up being a savings in itself.

For guns there is shooters choice just north of Dover on route 13 by Cheswold. Up a couple of miles further there is K & L archery located almost in Smyrna on route 13 as well. K&L also has a good fishing assortment. Just north of Smyrna a couple of miles are a couple of real good fishing supply places. In downtown dover on Lockerman street there is a real nice army surplus store.

If you head west out of Dover on route 8 there is a woodworkers supply located in the same shopping center as the food lion. If you keep heading west out route 8 then turn left on pearsons corner road, there are quite a few amish sawmills located within a few miles of each other. Once on pearsons corner road hang a right on Yoder road and there are three sawmills within a 1/2 mile of each other .

If that doesn't keep ya busy then give me a call  ;D
Hopefully the sun will be shining for you. Have a safe trip and may the #8 kick butt on sunday. Where will you be staying? Close to the track?

Gordon

Thanks again  Gordon .  I'm sure one or some of the places you mentioned will be getting some of my money.  I thought we were going to be staying close to the track but just found out today that the condo is in Ocean City MD . I didn't plan that  I just was ask to go with a group of coworkers who made the plans  and I have always wanted to go there so ,  I will go  with a smile on my face.I could accept the #8 winning as he is one of my drivers in a fantasy league but really the #20 is who I'm cheering for.
