I was cutting a magnolia on my LT15W yesterday and started getting ribbons that would clog up the dust chute instead of sawdust at one point.

Is this normal, or indicative of something wrong?

It is pretty common with Poplar, a cousin of Magnolia, even had some pine doing it to me yesterday, so nothing wrong with your saw.

It's mainly to do with the lay of the grain.

Yup, chances are you crossed a large knot, etc. and the blade was cutting with the wood grain for a short period of time.  Same thing that will happen with a chainsaw cutting with the grain rather than across the grain.  Noodles vs chips.
