Hey, Everyone.
I just got back from a trip to N.H. and Maine. While there I stopped
at couple (4 or 5 if you beleive my daughter ;D) of antique stores
in search of old woodworking tools. At one place I found a dozen or
so slicks in various sizes and condition. There were 2 of them that were

2 and 3 inches wide. There lengths were at least 24 inches and very
heavy. I don't recall the make of them but they were in very good shape
and seemed very sturdy. The price on them was $200.00 for the 3" and
$175.00 for the 2". One of the reasons I did'nt buy them was I was pretty
sure they wouldn't let me on the plane with them :D! I am thinking about
calling the guy back and buying them over the phone. My question is if
this is a reasonable price for these? I have not seen slicks this big or
hefty before. I also picked up 3 wooden moulding planes, a nice stanley
side rabbet plane and a couple of black arkansas oil stones. I was in old
tool heaven 8) 8). Thanks for any replys. Wade

Good tools are worth high dollars, however, I believe you can do better than those numbers. Look under the "for sale" section of the main page here at the forestry forum, our leader here has a whole list of quality tools for sale.

 Ray,
I went to Hulls Cove and Liberty Tool. Hulls Cove was the better
of the two for wood working tools. Liberty Tools is supposed to
be the largest used tool store in the country. Were it not for my
10 year old daughter (who this trip was for) I would probably
still be there ::)! There was so much stuff it's overwhelming.
The slicks I found at a place called the Lyons Den by the N.H.,
Maine border.
Beetle, they seemed kind of high to me also, but they seemed
very hefty and of a high quality. I did'nt ask him about the price.
I'm sure I could have bargained with him. Oh well, I'll call and
see what I can do. Thanks for the replys Wade

The price seems a bit high on the old slicks.  The thing I have seen about old tools like that is they may not have any temper and not hold an edge.  Hefty is not really a good quality in a slick as is the ability to hold an edge.   I have one that was made from the rear leaf spring of a truck and is a good 3/8 thick.  Holds an edge well but is heavy for long use.  But if you need to get ruff around a knot it is the tool to use.
