Pre-registration is required.
Deadline: MAY 4, 2010
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division plans, coordinates and administers a wide variety of forestry programs focused on the management, protection, health, improvement, and sustainable use of Wisconsin's forests, as well as the protection of life, property and resources from wild fire.  Forestry Technicians play a vital role in performing a variety of technical, administrative and paraprofessional activities in service to the greater Forestry program.

Forest Technicians work independently, yet cooperatively, to assist Foresters providing high quality forest management and forest fire management services. Depending upon the location of the position, technicians apply technical forestry knowledge to determine needs for application of forest management practices on public and non-industrial private lands; and additionally perform public safety and forest fire protection duties.

Job Duties: Analyze data, map woodlands, determine timber volumes and mark timber to be harvested; provide technical services in support of forest tax law; designate trees to be removed based on prescribed timber and management needs; prepare and recommend reforestation plans, examine woodlands and make recommendations for control of insect and disease attacks, fire and grazing; operate and maintain fire control heavy trucks and crawler tractors; train and direct fire fighters; coordinate local fire plans.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Applied forestry for Lakes States forest types; basic silviculture systems; timber cruising and marking principles and practices; tree identification and land description principles; operation and maintenance of forestry and fire fighting equipment; principles of woodland fire behavior; map reading; tree planting; radio communication; basic math and accounting principles.
