hey guys, new to the forum here. I just purchased a 330 timberjack cable skidder and I need some help with a few things. first of all, does anyone have a manual for this skidder? and second of all I have an Allison automatic transmission. are these a good pulling machine being an automatic?  this skidder also leaks from the transmission and I have no brakes, parking included so I need some parts, really need help looking for those brake parts, thanks!  ???

Where abouts are you from? I can hook you up with an old timer in new hampshire that knows all the ins and outs of those old jacks. He's got parts galore and can fix anything. Really a god when it comes to timber jacks! Even if you're not near new Hampshire he could help you out over the phone. His name is Francis I'll have to find his phone number for ya..

I have a 300 series parts book and it doesn't cover the Detroit motor or the Alison transmission. The transmission stuff covered is only the add ons like linkages, mounts and external brake hydraulic lines etc. I suspect the workshop manual may be similar so you may need an Alison manual or talk to an Alison specialist.

I've heard from many old timberjack users that they would stay far far away from that tranny. That its the weakest link in that machine! Almost all I know when it went bad would throw it out and put a manual tranny in it. The Allison is supposedly a pricey lady!!

The transmission is a TTB2220-1 by the way if you don't know the model. A quick search of the internet turned up a few sources of parts or rebuild services.

Putting in a manual is going to be major surgery as you would have to get a transfer case to fit in the front frame that has the 3 outputs. Were they running the reversing transmissions with divorced transfer, or a regular NP435 with a NP205 direct transfer and putting up with only 2 reverse ratios? I also don't know if you can rotate a direct transfer case on the NP435 so it drops vertically.

Hopefully your powershift issues are minor

Thank you all for the posts! I am not new to logging I've been in the woods since I was about 10 running a pulp hook for firewood orders, I've also done a lot of limbing and running a john deere 740 cable skidder. I am 17 years old and I just bought my tj for 5 grand with a rebuilt 353 detroit. Its a nice machine besides the tranny leaking oil and no brakes. I live in waldo maine and I would appreciate that number for the guy in nh! I also would like a copy of those manuals even if they don't have the engine and tranny! Thanks guys!

Hey 96 Logger, Welcome !!  I have a late 60's TJ330 cable that i've re-done blade to cable except for centre pins. I downloaded a complete manual for the 330 from Internet. I think I found it thru JD website, but I'll check. I also downloaded the complete manual for the screamin 353. I ordered a new carge pump from a USA based supplier who also carries all the Allison stuff you'll ever need. 1st trip out to garage I'll grab the company name and website for you. Not sure if the pic worked, but that is what mine looked like with a fresh coat of paint. Dont let them worry you about that Allison tranny, mine works like a charm and can pull like there is no tomorrow !!!

96 Logger,
Apologies for the confusion. I'm having a heck of a time with my login some days, and I missed the thread you sent yesterday and just saw it now. My ol' girl has a parking brake lever up on the side if the center console and it works great. As for the brakes, they are quite simple if you have all the parts. I put a new master cylinder on, bled it twice and have full wheel brakes on the pedal. Based on machine weight and the fact that I dont run chains, I still drop my blade when stopped as it will roll easy on the tires and I dont always trust park brake. Too easy to get hurt if it fails !!!! Info on mauals etc coming, I'll be at garage asap

The supply pump on a detroit can be rebuilt for 40 bucks. At home. There's 2seals and a shaft. That's all that's in them.

I know the latter 230,240 uses an AT545 allison. They can be bought from any truck junkyard for 5 to 600 bucks.

hey guys, I love all of the feed back! my timberjack 330 isn't quite as nice as yours deer guy I don't have nice tires or a pretty paint job, more like the worn out style, my skidder also has the full arch plate and shorter arch than yours, the guy I got mine off took a bunch of brake stuff apart so I have nothing to go by. you said you re did your brakes, maybe you have a link to where you got that master cylinder and all? also my skidder doesn't have a parking brake what so ever (scary) so any leads onto those brake parts and those manuals would be a big help, thanks!

ga jones

If all the brake parts are missing u may need to go to a forestry junk yard and get parts to rebuild. The parking brake u can get from a truck with an allison . It bolts to the output shaft on the trans.

hey, ga jones do you know how it hooks up exactly? I believe it has a brake drum in the center that has something to do with it

Probably looks something like this:

ga jones

Ya it should look like that. Plus a brake band around the drum and a simple cam over linkage with a cable going to the handle.

does anyone know where the vin number is located on this machine?

deerguy

Hey 96 Logger, somebody else awhile ago asked this question  as well. On my ol' sweetheart, the tag is on the inside face of the square tubing under the roof canopy right in front of the seat. When sitting, I just look up and slightly left and its right there. It looks like a factory install in that location and looks original.
I didnt forget the manuals etc, I have the DD manual ready to send if you send email address, as its too large for me to send via the Forum.
Hope that helps !!

96 logger

well deer guy, I cant find my tag but thanks for the help anyways! my email is suita_brandon@yahoo.com. I really appreciate you finding those manuals for me, cant wait to pull wood with my ol girl

96 logger

ive yet to find my tag deerguy..don't know where he is hiding. can you email me all of those manuals and tell me where you got your brake parts?

96 logger

i was never able to find that serial tag deerguy but i did take a picture of my 330 to show you. right now i have to take the tranny out because its leaking bad and im trying to find the parts to build my brakes. i really need those manuals you have if you get a minute can you please try to look for them?

Neilo

You need the Allison manual. The TJ manual won't help much unless it is a master cylinder or line issue.

The photos others have shown are of the type of powershift fitted to a 200 series machine, not a 300 series. The 200 series kept the divorsed transfer so the tranny only has one output. the TTB 2220-1 in the 300 series has three outputs, one to each axle and one to the PTO.

On the TTB 2220-1, the brake is internal to the transmission so I would recommend the Allison manual before you jump in. Here is a source of the manual:

Hey 96 Logger, we didnt forget about you. I tried PM'ing you and the file size for DD manual is too large. I'm waiting on my daughter this weekend to help me compress/zip the file so I can email it to you. As for transmission parts, I got what I needed from Trans Machine in Aurora, IL. They were super helpful and knowledgeable, with a great website. I looked at my TJ 33o/360 parts book, and nowhere does it show you're inline brake assy for the parking brake. I will forward you the parts book as soon as I find my electronic copy. Did you measure the diameter of the brake drum and go see your heavy equipment dealer? if you can find the right sized brake band and fabricate a few brackets, it shouldnt take long to install a complete new unit for not too many $'s.
