I want to build a small/medium sized (~20' x 20-30') pole barn for sheep and hay.  I have a bunch of chestnut oak and tulip poplar trees and logs for stock.  What size should I be milling timbers?  How do I go about finding plans?

Posts are typically 6x6,rest is standard framing for purlins and rafters.Plans should be available from your county or state extension agent.Might try a search through the forum archives, some nice pole barns have shown up here.
good luck.

This is very helpful.  Hopefully, I'll have a plan and a builder before I need to start sawing, but I guess if I have to, I can start with 1x8 for siding, 6x6 for posts and 2-by stock for the rest.   Thanks for the responses.
