Sorry it's going to be long
looky looker since 2020. member shorter
First about me, born 1954, retired production welder 30 yr service @ age 50. worked in carpentry and or drove big rigs when laid off and after retired from IH. Back around 2006 moved to south IL. to hunt big buck deer only got meat. At that time the Farmer i was working for let me take home some pines we been dropping. and i started using a Alaskan mill. Cut alot of various sizes got idea to build deck. kept every thing.and covered with tarp.No idea what i was doing or going to use them for. Decided to build a deck at the back of the house.2007 drew plans, 2 tiers, 3 stairways, and walkway between. Burned and oiled lower 14" of 4x4s for underground. Wish i took pics. Used T. water seal as i went along. done some time in spring 2008 one man op. Wife help when i was milling. Put a stain on in early 2010.
2016 sold house Moved to North Central AR. 20ac, 16ac of heaven. also 2010 home, 1 car garage, chick coop, 30'x40'two story wood heat Shop woo hoo. we have 3 decks with connecting walkways between that needed work (rotting). payed to have roof over rear deck connected into roof rafters $5000. Now Unemployable due to neck and lower back injuries. Slowly my wife and i started chainsaw milling, 2020 we decided to use our Covid $$$ to get a real mil we could afford, it was a Woodland Mills hm122, so much easier on both our backs. Found
F. F. and others for info.  My Equipment 2014 Rancher 4x4, cant hook, 4 chainsaws, ropes and winches w. snatch blocks. After a couple of blades decided to cut apart small camper and weld up a log arch to haul up to a 17' log off the ground. Oh and i used part of the camper to extend the mill another 7'6".
Stickered and stacked boards on slab were old house use to be. Tarped w. open sides and uncovered when suns out to help dry. All had been sprayed w vinagar then thanks to F. F. found TimBor Pro. Thanks F.F. after dropping pines in Feb. all sat till bark was falling off as i rolled them on to the mill, chicks loved the bugs.also found some sort of grub looking borer making holes, we didn't mined as long as wood can still be strong.
Started replacing decking 2022 on walkways and ramp. End of 22 wife put stain on, told her were not coloring we're sealing, then i got the look and shut it. April 2024 wife found some kinda crumbling on south back walk. i looked and there was more, I thought when i took down the big oak 10 yards away in back that shaded that part it was the original problem. That wood was pressure treated stuff. But what could be the cause now?
I have a meater but i do not remember what it read.  This summer temp was so oppressive some of east side walk curled up. When i lay them down its curve up but most were straight grain.
Called the guy that bought the other house asked bout deck he said looks just like i left it, he did put another coat on 2 year ago.

?? should i just go to Oak and hope for the best?
Have No Kiln, took year and half to save for sharpener setter & adjustable blade guide arm.
  Any Help is appreciated.

Well welcome to the forum. If you can work through the picture posting process see if you can get some posted of your rot issues, and your mill that will help the smarter than I folks out.

Gremlin06

Thanks for the response.
I'll try to get it done today

RetiredTech

Sorry I can't really answer your question. I have a couple pressure treated posts under my house that have not held up as well as I had hoped. I'll be replacing them with black locust post as soon as I can find one of those Round-To-Its.

Two big items at play with treated wood are the quality of the individual pieces and the standards to which the wood is treated.

The range of defects within grade can lead to early decay.   Different parts of a tree accept preservative at different levels.   Juvenile core wood takes preservatives at a different level than younger fibers.

The AWPA sets standards for treated wood.  There are multiple standards that include various preservative chemicals, wood species, levels of penetration of the chemicals and so forth.  Not all standards are equal.

Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) was the longer lasting standard up until 2003 when manufacturers discontinued using it for residential use.  It's still used for commercial fencing, guard rails, pier and dock pilings and agricultural purposes.

Current chemicals are supposed as good but experience in use is mixed.

Add in that we often cut treated lumber which exposes wood that has received less chemicals, there's lots of variables that can cause commercially treated wood to decay prematurely.

Home treatments have even more variables.

I hope this helps with the photos.
First, there is a file limit size for photos. If you can't get this to work you may need to resize them. Also it's easier for me to have one page open to the reply and another to the Gallery so I can just go from one tab to another.

To post your photos you first need to get them into the Gallery. Click on the Gallery button at the top of the page.
Click on the My Profile button to create a new album. This part is fairly self explanatory.

Now, to get the photo into the album click the upload file button.
Select the album you want to put the photo into.
I usually select the check box to use the photo name.
Click browse to select the photos you want to upload then click the open button at the bottom right.
Once they're uploaded you have a chance to change the name etc. Be sure to save the changes.

Now you can post your photo.
From any page click the Gallery button.
Next click the My Gallery button.
Select the album you want to use.
Click the photo you want to add.
Scroll to the bottom line and Right Click the code in the HTML (normal) field. It will turn blue.
Select copy.
Now just paste that code in your reply and when you click post it will display the photo.

You can also click Preview to check it out before you post it. It may take a few seconds to display. There are multiple ways to do it but this has always worked for me. It takes longer to explain it than to do it.
(Instructions provided with my multipart guaranty. If it breaks you own all the parts.)

Esteadle thank you for the reply, what I have cut so far is white oak drying bout 5 months, have a few reds I've been eyeballing, any trickery I should know bout?

Retired Tech thank you, I'll give it a try, I kept looking for how to, one said use the tool box but I only found info bout I think wood grade stuff. Your way sounds easier, but not being a genius with this stuff I'll get it even if it's a literal pain in my neck

I wood forget the red oak. Remove the whitewood from the white oak and lay outside up after drying.

My mill setup as of 6/2023 Was tired of bending to the ankle. Along with home made lumber transport Made from sprayer cart and 4"x 10' pipe i cut in halve and braced   and toolbox i made, the cart and box are from scrap i had.

I'm also trying to put pic of rot i talked bout.
wont fit for a drag & drop

Gremlin06

Here's the rot that is not more than 2 year old

beenthere

Are you saying "2 years old" since being placed as new??

Looks like it was placed as used 2 years ago. And had advanced decay at that time.

Thanks for the photo.

Beenthere,
I bought the mill in 2020 with covid money and milled the pines I cut down. They were leaning twords the house. And air dried till I placed em.

Gremlin06

Been out harvesting meat for the year. here are some more of the rot. and the last will be a pic of what it looked like when we bought the place.
May be some one could tell me is there a way to shrink pics from my gallery.

New Rot

Gremlin06

This is what it looked like in 2018

If those are joist beneath flooring/decking that is exposed to the weather, then it will rot.  Only pressure treated Pine can be used in such situations.

Magician thank you for the reply,
The last 2 pics R what I moved in to.
I never have built a deck attached on house.
What I'm trying to understand is I've done the same thing I did back in 2007. and that double deck according to the new owner is doing fine.
It's just got me scratching my bald head,

Magicman

I am probably not following what you are doing, but if water gets to untreated SYP (Southern Yellow Pine), it will rot.

When I lived in Murfreesboro IL I got some pine logs from farmer I worked for and chainsaw milled em. Then after a bit built double deck. Not any of it was PT pine, just Thomson's and some kind of deck stain sealer.
That was 14 yr. ago. This time wife was in charge of what ever sealing attempt.
Don't have the kind a $$to do 3 decks and 3 walkways.
