General Board / Re: New Grandson!

NC does offer the lifetime license.  For infants and seniors it's the same price.  @WV Sawmiller iI asked my son to let us buy the license for Ezra and wisely he said yes.   I'll be getting what NC calls the Unified Sportsman License with coastal fishing privileges.   It permits all hunting and fishing in NC except ducks and special fishing devices (traps and nets). Duck hunting only requires adding a duck stamp.

BTW I have his Dad's Snoopy fishing rod and reel put away to give to him in 3 or 4 years.

We've already had talks, Ezra and I, about catfish, sea trout, drum, bass, mountain trout and crappies.    ffcheesy ffcheesy  Next we"ll be talking about mackerel, bluefish, mahi mahi and wahoo.

Then there's deer and turkey and..well, you get picture.  I suppose he'll have to walk first.   ffcheesy

That really is a nice bridge build. Should last for some time. Barring the next 100 year flood or something.

Looks like it could be crushing damage, like from moose or deer. They can't snip it off like a rabbit.

The electric motors might be shot. I would imagine everything else is fine, except they will probably have some corrosion for sure like table saw surfaces.

Doc's advice of using a truck tarp motor is sound.  This is the method that the Peterson swing blade mill uses.

You can buy tarp motors from Surpluscenter.com, and as Doc said they are reversible.

Well Jim I hope you were not wearing a short skirt as the site of your bloomers might cause your chickens to go on a laying strike!  :snowball: ffsmiley

First tastes of summer...over 70 yesterday, today and tomorrow. We can finally get the tomato, chilli, eggplant and cucumber plants out of the house.

Sawmills and Milling / Re: Tapered log, no toe boards

With nice straight logs you are right that the taper is minimal over 8 ft. But get into the local cedar / cypress "farm" trees, and they have some serious butt flare. So an 8ft log might be 36" big end up only 30" at the small end. No matter what the mill, you need to correct that for best recovery.

Drying and Processing / Re: What mc is safe to start s...

I think the only danger with increasing the heat to sterilise levels too soon is if you exceed the safe drying speed for that species. So species / thickness / kiln design all matter. Construction pine is dried at high temp in about 2 days, and comes out of the kiln at ~19%, with any bugs well and truly cooked.  It's hard to dry pine too fast, but you can't do that with White Oak etc.

With more sensitive woods, you would dry them down to near your target moisture, following your kiln schedule, and then crank up the heat for that last 24 hours as that's both lower risk to the wood, and more energy efficient. While you could increase the temp earlier, you would also have to let the humidity increase, to keep drying at a safe rate. So you are pumping in more heat than really needed.
