I am reading a new book and found an interesting fact relating
to the timber industry.  So, I decided to turn it into
a trivia question.  On this forum, I am guessing that
the correct answer will be posted rather quickly
because a lot of knowledgable people hang around here.
The question:

What well known $billion American company, started
out as a timber company?  They no longer are in
the timber business, but when they were,  being
a timber company facilitated the business
that they are now in.

I don't know which company in particular you are thinking of, but almost every North American railway company in existance made it's early fortunes in timber and real estate.

No railway made any money until there were people to ship things, they were granted huge blocks of land, sometimes in the millions of acres, they would cut and ship wood as the rail line got to the forest, then after it was cleared they would sell off the land as farmland, creating customers for their new railway.

Buzz and Murf,
Nice guesses but this company no longer has
anything to do with trees.  It is a multibillion dollar
company and it's business is soaring. (hint hint)

Then you are probably talking about William Boeing who was a timber baron who decided to dabble in this new fad, airplanes.

By the way, the book I am reading is titled FLYBOYS.
It is the story about 8 american pilots who were
shot down and captured over the island of ChichiJima
late in World War II.   One of the pilots who was shot
down and rescued  was George H. W. Bush.

Chichi Jima was the home of the radio transmitters
that were the hub of communications during WWII.
It was more heavily defended than Iowa Jima but
due to the fact that it had no beaches, a land assault
was never attempted.
I am fascinated by the book and I highly recommend it.

Murf

Free hat?

Heck it could say "I like taxes" as long as it's free, my missus claims the only reason I put on weight when we're doing a road-trip is because of the free scoff in the mornings at the motels.  :D

A CAT hat would be a fine thing.  Never have too many hats.  I can wear it to the JD dealer the next time I go for parts.  He is always trying to sell me a newer machine to throw money at!  Actually come to think of it I won a Certified Used CAT Equipment hat at the piggy roast courtesy of Mark.  I thought if I wore it when I used the crawler it would behave better.  Unfortunately the opposite has been true ::)

OWW,

to work (at CAT) and I get lots of comments about it.
As soon as Murf IM's me with his snail mail address,
I will send him  a CAT hat too!

Murf,
I forgot to ask.. What is scoff?
Sorry,  I am from the midwest and don't
understand technical terms   ;)

Murf

Scoff is an old word, seldom used much anymore outside of the UK, maybe Iain or friends 'down under' would recognize it though.

It is a noun, a slang word that has been widely accepted, it means food, although when used as a verb it means to devour.

Speaking of trivia, I'm told it comes from the Dutch word "schoft" which means meal. After WW2 many Dutch fled their (destroyed) homeland and passed through the UK on their way to North America. They were penniless and starving and in begging for food, asked for food using the only word they knew, since almost none of them spoke English.

It was heard so often and for so long that it became an accepted slang word for food, usually in the context of free food given in exchange for, or as part of wages or such.

Thus, when you stay at some motels, the free brekkie they give you in the morning would be described as "scoff".

There, you learned something new today.  ;D

Ianab

True.. you do learn something new every day :D

Down Under it's common usage as a verb, meaning to eat with great enthusiasm.
"Who scoffed all the pies?"

I never knew the history of the word though  :P

Up here that word has changed pronounciation to "Skarf"  as in "he skarfed down both those pies".
I eat a high-fiber diet.  Lots of sawdust!

bighoss550

we have the "scarfed" version here too. :)

Whitepe:

I follow alot of those WWII pilot stories on the history channel as well. I'm on the look for a good WWII book of planes. I'm thinking of a couple of models I'de like to make out of wood. I'm thinking of models to built in the 2-3 foot length range. I'de lathe and hollow out the fusilage on the Delta. and slice the wings out on the bandsaw, then the motors could also be lathed. I'de only hollow out the fusilage in two sections where the wings would be attached. Then the artistic work comes when the painting a decal work. ;D

cheers
