Title: The Ruins
Post by: Darrel on February 22, 2018, 04:59:53 PM
My wife, Vera and I went for a little walk this morning to what we call The Ruins.  It's across the road and is next to the Bar-S Ranch.

The clap board siding is starting to come off.

A view of the bed on the inside.

There is a crude stone hearth behind the barrier and a hole in the roof above. I don't know if there was a small stove or not.  Although it does look like small fires were built directly on the hearth.

Most of the roof is missing. Those are 6x6 timbers.

The building is about 10' across and has 6 sides.  This is a view of the wall construction from the inside. Once again 6x6's.

The only window.

This is, or was attached to the south side of the hexagonal building with no door inbetween.

These are 8x8's about 12' long with only a little rot where they contact the ground.

We took the long way home and saw this burl on the base of a 18" Pondarosa pine.

Vera posing with a crooked little pine.

Do you see the ugly troll that didn't make it home before sunrise?

Hope you enjoyed our fun little adventure.

Hi Darrel, looks like you got a little snow, we were down (out of Bonanza) about  2 weeks ago working on the deck/porch (20'x44') and got about 2". Have been  back at Cottage Grove getting taxes together and this morning had a measured 4" on the deck.  Is  that  old building off Big Springs rd ? I looked at several houses in the subdivision about 2009. Did that Forest Fire a couple years ago get close to your place?

Metal detector!  There's probably an old mason jar full of silver dollars buried behind that cabin.  You better go look.  Gary

Any idea when or who built it?

Very neat.
Where I work we have old homesteads all over the ranch. I generally dig around a bit in the garbage pit for bottles and whatnot. The best thing I have found is a 2HP hit-and-miss Waterloo engine made in 1916 and a grain mill. Both are seized up pretty solid but are neat to see.
Someday I need to get out there with my metal detector.

Goose, I've wondered the same thing. Who? when? Where'd they go? It looks as though there was a cabin just a hand full of yards to the north. You can see the remains of an old wood cook stove and sink mixed in with evidence of fire. Old timers in the area say that a family of Native Americans lived there many years ago.

Kbietz, ya, there is a whole lot of potential there. I've thought about going to the county and finding out who the owner is and making an offer to buy.

Iwawoodwork, it has snowed at least a little bit everyday this week. About 5" last weekend, then more melting than accumulation until yesterday when we got about 2" in the afternoon and evening. Temps in the single digits at night. And yes, it is off Big Springs Dr.

I hate to go metal detecting on somebody else's property without permission. It's kinda like looking at cool cars in a parking lot, I look but don't touch.

The six-sided construction looks like a Navaho hogan.
