I found this just searching the internet.
I use the FF Tool Box Calculator if I need to print out an estimate sheet.
I use my BF App on my phone when figuring some jobs at the mill.
But sometimes when I'm talking on my phone to a customer its hard to talk and use the App on the phone at the same time.
I found this one tonight that I have printed out and put in a thin binder.
I can now just flip it open and determine BF 'age for lumber.
You may have a more convient way but this works for me.
Here's the link:
Board Feet Calculator or Board Foot Calc (http://mrwebman.com/woodcalc.php)
I use this on lumber.
thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet /12 to get board footage.
example: a 2x4 8' long
2x4x8/12=5.33 bdft.
Easy for me to remember and use.

That is easy BUT you have to do it. Aggravating to use the calculator on my phone while talking on my phone. :D I just look it up on the sheet.
In fact i have a sign up for customers that says : thickness in inches x width in inches x length in inches divided by 144. Helps the customer to understand.
If you are doing the length in inches you need to divide by 144. ;)
Yeah but there's more money in it if you divide by 12.
That is using Goat Math.

Oops.
Goats probably should keep using the preprinted table. :D :D :D
Woodmizer has a log rule and lumber scale, in a little orange envelope with a viewing window, so you can slide the scale to the appropriate row and easily read that row. I am sure a lot of the folks here have see and used one.I keep that in my truck all the time. My old mill had a lumber scale right on the mill.

It's hard to see in the picture, but its on the right side blade cover in the picture. But I mostly just use the thickness X width X length / 12 formula. Most of my more common boards I have memorized over the years anyhow and don't need a scale or calculation.

How do you know? I may be getting $300 a board foot. 😳😳😳

That's what I meant to sayJake. Thanks
I use this one a lot on computer Woodworkers Source: Board Foot Calculator & Definition (https://www.woodworkerssource.com/shop/calc.html)
This is the one I use, but not while talking on my phone. I have a tablet at my desk that I can use while on the phone...
Lumber Board Footage Calculator - Southern Pine (http://www.southernpine.com/lumber-calculator/)
Just punch in the numbers of any size/ quantity of lumber and you have total board footage for that job...I take that total board footage number and multiply it by $1.65 and that's what I charge the customer
We have a calculator that does that.
I'll put together a couple simplified boardfoot calcs for you guys to use. No sense leaving home for such a thing. Give me an hour.

Here is the simplified Tally Calculator
Board Foot Tally Calculator (http://forestryforum.com/calcs/simplified-bf-tally.html)
There is already a more elaborate version in the toolbox that will accept customer name and keep your information in it for printing.
I'll go make a simple bf calc.
On a keypad for multi-taskers with trimmed goat hooves. :)
Here is your Simple Board Foot calculator. Both new calcs are mobile friendly. Easy to use on the phone. I'll add them to the toolbox.
Simple Board Footage Calculator (http://forestryforum.com/calcs/simple-bf.html)
I've updated the toolbox. There is also a quick link to the toolbox on mobile devices in the quick links drop down.
I just tried it on my phone. From picking it up, going to the toolbox, picking the simple board foot calc right on top, inputting the data for a board and getting an answer it took 15 seconds.
Very nice. The service here is excellent! :)

Wow that's cool, guys start talking about calculating board ft and next thing you know Jeff has a calculator on here! Thanks Jeff for all you do to make this forum great!
I added a bit of logic to the new simple calculator so you can tally with it too. I also changed the thickness to a pick list so there is one less thing you have to enter with a keyboard. You can keep inputting and adding it to a running total, or you can reset the whole thing.
Let me know if you would like to have it completely keyboard free. I could add preset widths and lengths and number of pieces. I'd just need to know what you would want. Widths in whole and halfs? Lengths? Leave the piece input alone maybe? Lets make this as functional and easy as you need it.
Hey thats pretty cool Jeff...thanks.
The BF numbers that slow me down is when I need figure something with fractions.
I don't remember my decimal numbers from school so the BF Cal.
that figure the fractions are a big help. :)
Me too, once the goat was quartered I took it inside to the wife, she's better with fractions.
Okay, here is another calculator for those of you with fat thumbs for your phone. I'm calling it the poke calc. All you have to do is poke the item you want, unless you want to enter a number of pieces. Give it a try on your phones and see how it works!
Board Footage "Poke" Calculator (http://forestryforum.com/calcs/poke.html)
Goat, how do I print the chart?

Love it!
It's all on the framing square hanging in the mill.
You can use a framing square to compute board footage beyond 4/4 thick?

Yesterday I did a lot of "this" times "that" times "other" divided by "what". ;D The good thing was that I got paid. :)

What I miss not having is a green log weight calculator. I had an app on my phone but it is no longer operational. :-\
We have a green log weight calculator....
Saw Log Weight (http://forestryforum.com/calcs/log_weight.htm)
:o Maybe what I should have said was that I miss not having a brain that works all of the time. smiley_dizzy
Fact is that I have used that calculator many time. ::)
OK, I am awake now. ;D
I don't say it enough thank you for making things easier forms me and others that use this board
I did some more work on the new "poke" calculator to make it completely "poke" friendly. No keyboard entry needed. You can now select up to 100 pieces from the selection list.
I have also converted the log weight calculator to be completely pokeable and added a reset button to it which it did not have before. :)

great work, is there a way to use it without being on the internet? my sawmill shed is about 100 ft out of service for the phone to pickup the interweb...
Quote from: alanh on March 09, 2018, 03:17:31 PMis there a way to use it without being on the internet?
Absolutely. Just save the calc page to your device. The calcs are self contained and do not need to be connected to the internet to work.
While I was at it, I went ahead and converted the Saw Log Volume Calculator (Board Footage) that displays in Internationa, Doyle and Scribner to a pole calc as well.

Hummm.... Whats another word for White pine?
edit... I found it...
For weight? Under pine eastern white.
I figure the board foot @ 1 inch as per the surface area of the piece and add mentally if thicker than 1 inch [double for 2 inch, half again as much for 1 1/2" etc. I actually haven't used the framing square in a long time but that was how I started, learned it in shop class.
I actually used the FF's new Poke Jeff Calculator today.
I like it a lot. 8)

Ok, Im not surprised I couldn`t figure out how to save it to my iphone, but my wife couldnt either, I can save it but it wont come up w/o internet, can someone tell me where I need to poke?
I browsed to the calculator on my phone. Then I turned my phone to airplane mode. Then I went back to the open page in my browser (Safari), used the calculator successfully.
It is "saved" among the open windows in my phone's memory. Unlike other open windows where the links don't work when I'm not connected to the internet, the poke calculator's poker buttons and calculator functions DO work when I am not connected to the internet. So to "save" it, I have only to leave this window open and not overwrite it by browsing somewhere else with that window.

You can still get internet via wifi in airplane mode. You just can't get cell reception.
You can use airplane mode to avoid roaming charges when travelling. You won't be able to send or receive text messages or phone calls, or use data services, butyou could connect to a Wi-Fi network to check your email or browse the Internet.
