Title: Stihl splitting maul hook?
Post by: Goldseal on March 27, 2018, 06:00:20 PM
Hi all, I have a question about a Stihl woodcutter splitting maul I just bought. The blade has a hook shape to it. What is the hook for? Thanks in advance, Goldseal

Only thing I can think of is to add leverage when it gets stuck.

I've got a monster maul with no flare and a fiberglass handle splitter with flare on top and bottom of the blade.  There is a weight difference, but I don't notice any difference from that part of the geometry in actual splitting.  The monster is easier to remove if stuck, but I could see pushing down on the handle of the Stihl maul without the upper flare being even easier in some wood.

May get better answers on the firewood board down below...

The hook will help to grip the end of a piece to stand it up, keeps you from bending over for all the re-splits.
