Title: Ballpark lumber prices
Post by: D6c on April 03, 2018, 04:16:59 PM
Probably been asked quite a few times, but was trying to figure out what to charge for some of my stack dried lumber.
I have a guy calling for some lumber to be used on some camp cabins and since I'm new to selling I don't know what a fair price might be.
I have some ERC 4/4, some red oak 4/4, some elm, and a little hackberry and walnut.  I have more walnut that's been air drying for years but I might keep it for myself.
Since it's not kiln dried I don't expect it to be too much.

For flat, sound boards; walnut- $4.00 , erc. $2.00 , r. oak- $3.00. This is what I would get in 1" decent stuff.  Quarter sawn, clear both sides and or thicker; more $.
the other  wood I can't say.

Availability of similar wood in your area will be a big factor. I keep up with local trader papers for what other people advertise their rough cut air dry lumber. Most sell cheaper than me.

Moody's price is lower on walnut than mine, I think the ERC is right/similar to my area and Red Oak would never bring that where I am. As I said it's dependent on supply and demand. IMHO the longer it properly air dries, as long as no insect or other damage, it should just be increasing in value.

When you sell it you should feel comfortable with what you receive and not feel guilty or think you took advantage of the buyer (Some people skip that step but I think it is worthwhile). Good luck.

Sell it for twice what you have in it, including expenses.
Go to Craigslist and there is usually someone selling green, rough sawn, mill run.  See if the prices match up.  If not, then reduce your expenses, and sell it for twice what you have in it.  Hmmm, I wonder why I said that twice. ;D

Come to think of it I have never bought lumber at a ball park either.... :D  I would guess it's like hot dogs - about 5 times the cost of normal.  Probably run a guy a whole SGU for one board foot!!
