Title: Unussual Tree Growth.
Post by: tgalbraith on June 22, 2018, 10:49:15 AM
8)I am sending some photos of a mature red oak tree, that I must have walked by a million times; but only noticed the odd growth recently.  It had a sucker type shoot at the base that grew about ten feet and then re-entered the main trunk.  My uncles old sheep fence runs right past it, and I squirrel hunted these woods for 70 years.

Yup,  trees do strange things!   About  40 years ago I came across  a red  cedar that  had grown out  of a red oak tree. There was no sign of cedar roots.
The  cedar  was perfect  fence post  size.,  so....you guessed it.  I still kick myself  for that. They might  both still be alive today....

Clumps of red maple sprouts that coppice off one harvested stump tend to do this pretty often.  If i come upon a clump of 5 i will usually thin it to the best two that have good separation.

I had some eastern white pine that the limbs would do that. Maybe 2 feet between "limbs"
