So I have a lot of pine logs that I have mentioned on an earlier thread, that I really am not buying.... more of salvaging. Most are 6-12ft long and are from 8-24''. My thinking was to just start cutting and having some to sell since I already have a retail area where I grind and color mulch. The guy that I bought the mill from advised me not to waste my time trying to cut 2" material because it was too hard to compete with the big box stores on 2". He said he cut mostly 1" material and sold 1x8, 1x10, and 1x12s for the most part. I guess I could just do that, but shouldn't i be cutting some 6x6 beams or such out of my better stuff? I am new at it, but have cut enough to build a sawshed and an office, so I really dont have a need to cut anything else for myself, so was planning on starting to sell some, but just really didnt know where to start or what to start cutting and drying. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks
I have no idea about your area , wether local building codes will allow it. Where I live , beams seem to always be in demand. I imagine wide 1" would be in demand everywhere tho. All you can do is mill a bunch up and see what sells.

I agree to stay out of the framing lumber market. I would contact Major Munn in Sumrall who has/operates a kiln since you would be selling non-dried lumber anyway.

My last whack of 1" pine is gone so we snagged 18 logs yesterday to restock. I have a need for 1x4 furring strips, 1x8x5/4 roof decking and 1x12 siding backed up and then some for stock for a local cabinet shop and the board here and there folks. Our structural timbers and framing need to be graded except for exempt structures but I am pretty much out of 6x6 and 6x8.
I sell 1" boards 9 to 1 over 2" and beams.
I sell 1x10 the most.
Magic Man, I see Major Munn( or at least i think its him) in the market bulletin advertising for drying and other things.... are you saying i should sell the rough cut to him and let him deal with it from there or get him to dry it for me??

I know areas arent the same, but is 70 cents/ board foot going to be about right for rough cut pine in the 1x10 or 1x8 cuts?
Yes, that is Major. I have had him Dry as well as Plane & T&G Ash and SYP lumber for me and every time he has tried to buy my lumber from me. I would give him a call and test the market. Since he has a market, selling green lumber to him might be the best option until you can develop your own market. All of my dealings with him have been favorable.

Right now I'm at $0.60 a bf green
And 0.65 air dried
Of course bigger and longer goes up considerable.
I may have a price increase the beginning of the year. Been kicking the idea around.
